> Holocaust jokes. My parents are still-living survivors, so it is hard for me to see the humor. Terms like grammar nazi/soup nazi are really tough. I could never watch Hogan’s Heroes.

This bugs me. \*Hogan’s Heroes \*was not showing funny Nazis or concentration camps. It was a POW camp run by the regular German army. The Nazis/SS were universally shown to be nasty and evil and not humorous. They were disliked and feared even by the regular army people. It wasn’t a great show, but it was harmless and starred many German Jews that ensured the Germans and especially the Nazis never won.

I’m sorry that all this was missed. It was a mildly amusing show that I liked as a kid and respect as an adult as I learned of the actors being Jews that escaped.

[QUOTE=wiki]
The actors who played the four major German roles–Werner Klemperer (Klink), John Banner (Schultz), Leon Askin (Burkhalter) and Howard Caine (Hochstetter)–were Jewish. Furthermore, Klemperer, Banner, Askin and \*\*Robert Clary \*\*(LeBeau) were Jews who had fled the Nazis during World War II. Clary says in the recorded commentary on the DVD version of episode “Art for Hogan’s Sake” that **he spent three years in a concentration camp** , that his parents and other family members were killed there, and that he has an identity tattoo from the camp on his arm. Likewise \*\*John Banner \*\*had been held in a (pre-war) concentration camp \*\*and his family was exterminated \*\*during the war. \*\*Leon Askin \*\*was also in a pre-war French internment camp and his **parents were killed at Treblinka**. Howard Caine (Hochstetter), who was also Jewish (his birth name was Cohen), was American, and Jewish actors Harold Gould and Harold J. Stone played German generals.

As a teenager, \*\*Werner Klemperer \*\*(Klink) (son of the great conductor Otto Klemperer) fled Hitler’s Germany with his family in 1933. During the show’s production, he **insisted that Hogan always win over his Nazi captors**. He defended his playing a Luftwaffe Officer by claiming, “I am an actor. If I can play Richard III, I can play a Nazi.” Banner attempted to sum up the paradox of his role by saying, “Who can play Nazis better than us Jews?” Ironically, although Klemperer, Banner, Caine, Gould and Askin play typecast World War II German types, all had actually served in the US Armed Forces during World War II—Banner and Askin in the US Army Air Corps, Caine in the US Navy, Gould with the US Army, and Klemperer in a US Army Entertainment Unit.

My Bolding above.
I am also a bit sensitive to the \*mouth breather \*jokes. I have very bad sinuses that reduce me to breathing through my mouth most of the time.

Well, all of that meant very little to a little kid seeing a TV comedy show with Swastika arms band and German soldiers while my dad has a numbered tattoo on his arm. The distinction between Nazis and regular German soldiers a small one when you are talking about issues that one is sensitive about.

The fact that some of the actors were Jewish does little to offset how it felt to see those wacky goofy Germans being outsmarted. I don’t want the German soldiers/Nazis to look like buffoons. They weren’t

(board weirdness- this is the rest of my post)
The fact that some of the actors were Jewish or even survivors does little to offset how it felt to see those goofy Germans being outsmarted. I don’t want the German soldiers/Nazis to look like buffoons or minimized. I want the history to be taken seriously and not become someone else’s joke- and that is why it is important to me. It doesn’t have to be important to someone else. Most things that people are sensitive about may not seem entirely logical to people who aren’t bothered by them. However to read that it “bugs you” can’t be my concern, but I would hope you could understand why it might important to me. I don’t mean to be snarky, but I have my reasons for why seeing those wacky German soldiers was hurtful.

> I was raised dirt poor; not a pot to piss in, or a window to throw it out of, as the saying goes. My mom went from crappy job to crappy job; waiting tables in restaurants, assembly line manufacturing work, you name it. We went from one rented place to another. When mom had a good week, we ate OK; when she had a bad week, it was cowboy beans & rice for days at a stretch. Our cars were always second-hand old beaters that my older bro kept running with duct tape, baling wire and a whole 'lotta luck.
>
> As a boy growing up in central, and _north_ central, Texas, I spent a good deal of time in Mexico. Down there you meet _real_ poverty; kids not wondering if beans & rice are on tonight’s menu, but whether they’ll actually eat at all. Kids wearing clothes that were old and ragged when their older siblings owned them.
>
> I always bristle when I hear someone of financial means pissing and moaning about how poor they are. “We simply can’t afford to get Tiffany the Lexus for her birthday. We’re just _toooo poor_ right now. She’ll have to settle for a Mustang.” Fuck you.
>
> I also get belligerent when I hear Mr. $3,000. Dollar Suit make comments about how ‘the poor are poor because they choose to live that way…’. Fuck you extra strength.

Ms. Hummer was down at the stables asking if anyone had change for a twenty - she needed to pay the farrier eighty bucks for putting four new shoes on her horse, but had a fifty and two twenties (in my local currency - not US).
“Oh, just give the man a tip,” I said. She gives him seventy and says she’ll give him the other ten later - or next time she gets the horse shoed.
Fuck you bitch - it’s a glass of wine to you. To him it’s 2lb of rice, 1lb beans, 2lb onions, a bottle of oil and 2lb of back and neck.
“Have you ever noticed,” she says to me “that people who own horses are always broke?” :: Horsey laugh:: Her five year old was in the back seat tipping a bag of chips that easily cost ten dollars out the window.
I tipped him ten for putting the horse manure into my car (it’s free!) and he gave me a breadfruit worth more while we giggled like two kids. Ms Hummer has a kind of poverty that only money can buy.

How you look - be it sex, race, colour, body type, short, tall, old, young or … gasp … ugly! It’s just an outer shell, people.

I’m very sensitive to anything that has to do with my body… I am very self-conscious about my appearance…

I am also very sensitive to child abuse and molestation, I have been through both and I imagine that’s where my self-consciousness comes from. A ton of verbal and physical abuse can do wonders to your self-esteem.

I hate it when people take those things so lightly… Children are very impressionable, and nobody deserves to go through anything of the sort…

You know, I was thinking about this thread as I took a soak in the tub and I realized that a thread like this requires a delicate touch. We are revealing deep feelings that often come from painful places in our lives. I think it would be wise to be cautious as to how we respond to other people’s sensitivities.

Good point, I do get tired of the complaints against \*Hogan’s Heroes \*as I think it is usually based on a misconception about the show and the actors and writers involved, but I should have been more sensitive to your feelings about it. Let me say this, I don’t really understand your point of view and I guess I cannot, but I am sorry for adding to your pain in this.

It’s always bugged me when people use thier thumb and forefinger to mimic a gun and blowing thier brains out.

Like "these people are so annoying…(mimics shooting themselves).

Also people bragging about mistreating animals. I don’t mind ethical hunting or culling for a reason but not for amusement or out of boredom.

I swear like a drunken sailor and drop the F-bomb with abandon but I hate to hear people take the Lord’s name in vain (odd because I’m an agnostic/borderline athiest) or use the MF word. They do pop out once in a while if I hit my thumb with a hammer or something similar.

I’m really sensitive to the ways that women put down other women. For example, when talking about some woman that seems “perfect” – she’s pretty, smart, successful, etc – I notice that many women will be really negative about her, like “oh she must be anorexic” or “she’s so stuck up.” I don’t know, maybe men do it too.

Well, maybe not the same as many other things, but I have ED (erectile dysfunction) and spent many, many years dealing with it. I’m very sensitive to partners who make a big deal of it. I always tell people early in relationships I have it, and the main thing for me is that if I feel secure with the other person, the ED is a non-issue; its like it doesn’t exist.

But I’ve had some people that were less-than-subtle about their frustration with the situation. Its difficult enough being a young man with this issue- I feel treated like a pariah in our youth and sex-obsessed culture. And of course feeling bad/bothered by it only makes the problem _worse_. So I would say it bothers me a LOT when people treat me like a sexual paraplegic, when I’m not.

People trashing my alma mater (San Jose State) also pisses me off and I’ve had people who were in earshot and knew I graduated there tell someone, “Oh I dont want to go to SJSU, any idiot can get in there and get a degree”
