I go into serious withdrawal without my iPod, but I couldn’t live without the following 10:

Pavement – Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
Rolling Stones – Beggar’s Banquet
David Bowie – Hunky Dory
Modest Mouse – Moon and Antarctica
Clash – London Calling
Beatles – Revolver
Radiohead – OK Computer
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Live Seeds
A Tribe Called Quest – Midnight Marauders
Stereolab – Transient Random Noise Bursts With Announcements

5 alternates:

Talking Heads – Naked
Wedding Present – Seamonsters
Ustad Shahid Parvez – Raag Rageshri
Yo La Tengo – I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One
Bruce Springsteen – The Wild, The Innocent, and The E Street Shuffle

If I could, there’s another 50 at least that I would be very uncomfortable without.

The Tea Party - Transmission
Faith No More - Angel Dust\*
Hilltop Hoods - The Calling
Jeff Buckley - Grace

I find it interesting that the location had an influence on my selection, the thought occured to me that some albums wouldn’t be suited listening to outdoors on an island. Maybe I’m taking the question too literally though.

Nope, sorry, no Greatest Hits albums (see the OP) – this should free up some room in your pants. 😉

**4thmonkey** – I certainly didn’t necessarily intend the nature of the venue to be a factor – it’s just shorthand for “these ten and these ten only, nothing more and nothing less, because you’re out in the middle of nowhere.” Would “stuck in a cave somewhere” or “on the space station” yield different lists?

I find it interesting how many times the Beatles pop up – damn, I should have asked people to post their ages, though sometimes a generation can be inferred – and not the Stones.

And it’s fun checking out what are favorite albums for particular groups – is anyone else going “great group, but WTF on that being their best album”?

Since you’ve put the question out, I’m old enough to know better but still young enough to trust.

\*Rain Dogs \* - Tom Waits (because I’m listening to it now, haven’t listened to it in years, and it was the first Waits album that I waited to come out.)
