I may have missed it, but if not, I’m staggered the thread has got to 100 posts with no mention of Watership Down. Was it not popular in the US? It’s one of my top 5 favourite books, period - I’ve reread it 2-3 times as an adult.
Mine too. I don’t think of it as a children’s book though.
I didn’t read until I was an adult because it had been written yet.
Yeah, me neither.
Huh. I mean, I’m well aware it’s not really about cute fluffy bunnies, and it covers a lot of ‘adult’ themes. But so does Harry Potter, and nearly everyone agrees that is a children’s book. Plus, Watership Down originated as stories the author told to his own children.
So far, I’ve seen no mention of Mr. Grumpy and the Kitten, by Fleur Conkling.
Basically, “Mr. Grumpy” is the school janitor. He has a real name, but all the kids call him, “Mr. Grumpy,” because he is. Until a kitten comes into his life.
It’s a charming story. A chapter book suitable for 9-year-olds, but it still holds a place on my shelf.
Just because the characters in the book are rabbits, that doesn’t mean the book is meant for children! I read it as an adult and cried my eyes out at parts.
