Wow, I know a half-dozen songs that have already been nominated!
Here’s my additions:
Amsterdam - Guster (2003)
All the Things I’ve Done - The Killers (2004)
All About That Bass - Meghan Trainor (2014)
Angela - The Lumineers (2016)
Adore - Amy Shark (2016)
I would like to appeal this ahead of some of my submissions. I took this to mean “No covers of songs originally released before January 1, 2000”. I have some cover songs in my mind, but all are covers of songs released in this century. (We are, of course, talking about a nearly 25 year period of time, so there are going to be some covers like this)
Is this exception OK? It allows us to pick the artist we like, without breaking the spirit of the poll. I would of course, provide the original artist and original release date parenthetically in my submission of one of these)
Arco Arena - Cake, 2001
Ask - Sharon Van Etten, 2012
All I Want Is You - Barry Louis Polisar (From the Juno soundtrack), 2008
Angry White Boy Polka - Weird Al, 2003
I’m seeing this as track 9 on Barry Louis Polisar’s album, " My Brother Thinks He’s a Banana and other Provocative Songs for Children (1977), but I can’t confirm it by my own knowledge.
You have to be careful of songs appearing in hit films and big hits by famous artists. Sometimes they completely overshadow the origins. (like just about every blues song recorded by a white band in the 60’s and 70’s)
I’m really not much of a music-head, but I mentioned this thread to my family over dinner, and they–all with active Spotify accounts–had suggestions, including:
Achilles Come Down, 2017, Gang of Youths
All I Wanna Do Is Play Cards - Corb Lund (2005) - annoyingly the video with the artist is a sketchy live version, so ignore this fan video and enjoy the song.
I’ve got a few more I could have used but they seem to be being picked off one by one by other people anyway (“Achilles Come Down” was on my list but got named while I was typing).
