You know, I came into this thread thinking this would be a snap. Now that I’ve read some of the responses, keeping it to five is freaking hard!!

South Park
Grounded for Life
Married with Children
It is with heavy heart, I can only choose five.
Roseanne
Cheers
Fraiser

Seinfeld
I’m probably forgetting something though.

Roseanne
Gilligan’s Island/Brady Bunch (childhood guilty pleasure tie)
Coupling (British version)*
The Office (U.S. version)
Modern Family
How I Met Your Mother
Gilligan’s Island
*I haven’t seen anyone else mention this one, which is surprising because it is VERY good IMHO… funny, clever writing, engaging characters (think a British version of “Friends” except EVERYTHING is about sex). I can only assume that not many have seen it or it surely would be mentioned more often. Last time I watched was on Netflix, btw.
Judging by past threads, a lot of us are familiar with Coupling. I would put BlackAdder over it if I were going to add a Britcom, though.
So that may be the problem. First, it’s not even the best British series and limiting the list to five American series is bloody hard. Pardon my French. Second, both shows had three good six-episode seasons and a fourth not-as-good season. Most shows have at least one weak or worse season, but that’s a big chunk of a limited series. Even if you add them all together those series total far fewer episodes than one season of Gilligan’s Island. That’s a huge advantage American series have. A 200-episode show will burn itself into your memory more than a 24-episode show and make 25 weak episodes stand out less.
If I can list only the top five, I guess they’d have to be
- Big Bang Theory
- Dick Van Dyke
- Cheers!
- Night Court
- Fawlty Towers
I could go on a lot longer, though, if I were to list all my favorites.
