Having 2 dishwashers if you also have kids is a really nice to have. Instead of going in the sink to be dealt with in the future, you put it in the dishwasher that’s empty. It’s a really nice feature we designed into our new house. With no kids, it’s probably nice to have on occasion. We do 1-2 loads of dishes per day, and it’s really an effort efficiency thing with 2 dishwashers.
I live alone in a two-bedroom townhouse that got about 900 square feet or so of living space, so things can’t afford to get out of control otherwise I’d qualify for a spot on Hoarders.
Well – there IS my garage, but that’s another story entirely: a job I’m going to have to tackle this spring or it will go yet another year without being put to rights and that WILL make me crazy.
Inside, I’m a little obsessive about keeping things neat – a far cry from my younger years as my once-roommate sister will tell anyone who will listen. Top to bottom house cleaning is every other month.
Pickup cleaning during the week may or may not include scrubbing bathrooms, dusting furniture, and mopping the Pergo flooring in the entryway and in the kitchen. Heavy-duty stuff includes washing windows and curtains in the spring and fall.
With three cats in the house, the litter box is scooped daily and emptied every two to three days. It’s cleaned twice a week to reduce odor. I replace the box once a month with a new one.
One of the trio is a ginormous, long-haired … something. Turk’s fur is a lot like cotton candy and it sticks to EVERYTHING. Vacuuming everything that doesn’t move is a never-ending, almost-daily task. If I don’t, I have cat hair up to my ankles overnight.
He’s like the feline version of PigPen. He sheds at exactly the same rate, year round, brushed or not brushed. The other two are short-haired, thank god, and don’t seem to shed at all. I bought one of those fancy tornado canister whatsits to keep up with the cat hair. Works a charm.
I remember to buy solar salt for the water softener by accident most of the time. I have an on-demand softener, so the salt use is a bit less than it would be in a house of four. I’m just lousy at remembering.
Dishes are done daily – meaning thrown in the dishwasher after cooking and/or eating and the kitchen put to rights before I leave it for the night. I hate to come home to messy counters, etc. All trash goes out to the big Republic container in the garage as it accumulates.
HVAC filters are changed once a month, especially in summer. Laundry is done as needed, usually small to medium loads two or three times a week and folded and put away as it comes out of the dryer. Bedding is changed either on Friday or Saturday, depending on whether I plan to spend the weekend at the DiveMaster’s.
Cleaning service comes every other Monday, so part of the proceeding Sunday is spent tidying up the big pieces; putting away the pile of mail on the kitchen table, tidying up the knitting/craft project that clutters up the sectional sofa, moving the laptop that also usually lives on the sofa to a safe location, tossing miscellaneous stuff into the bedroom closet, that sort of thing. I do not ever ‘clean’ the house before they show up. Then I write a check and leave it on the kitchen table.
I do laundry every 3 weeks or so over the course of the weekend. It’s left over from the days when I used to lug 6 or 7 baskets of clothes to the laundromat. I have never gotten into the habit of doing laundry as I go. I’ve never really wondered why until today. I suspect if I had ever had children I would have picked up a better habit. My husband and I also wear things more than once between washings unless they are stained or extra dirty for some reason. We have enough socks and stuff to last for a month between loads.
Otherwise, either the husband or I will tidy up the kitchen daily after dinner, do the dishes, wipe of counters, sweep if it’s gross, stuff like that. Not having pets or children does cut down on the housework.
I’ve lately gotten into the habit of tidying my craft room every week or so. It’s still not perfect, but it’s getting better.
We have a cleaner who comes every week.
I do groceries on Wednesdays for the whole week.
Every night I make sure that the kitchen counters have nothing on them (so all dishes are either washed or in the dishwasher) and that everything gets put away.
There is some nagging the children and husband that goes along with that, sadly.
I clean the outside of the house and the windows in the fall and spring.
I clean out every cupboard, closet, drawer and cubby every six months on a rotating schedule (for example, I will be doing the kitchen cupboards this month).
I hate, hate, hate clutter and try to not have too much stuff so I don’t have to deal with putting it away. The kids, on the other hand…but they’re learning.
