I was born, raised and still live in Minnesota. As much as I hate our long winters, I don’t think I could leave this beautiful state. My landscape is anywhere in the woods, by a lake or stream. We have woods behind our house that I walk in all the time. I’m also good with sitting on the patio facing the woods. It’s so calming to me. I also just like being outside. In the summer, I eat most of my meals outside, I relax and read or do a crossword outside. The thought of being in the house on a beautiful day give me the willies.
Replace Minnesota with Michigan, and this is me.
While Alaska’s terrain is always on my mind, I also have many other places imprinted in my brain. The Serengeti Plain and Ngorngoro Crater come to mind, as does Victoria Falls and Antelope Canyon (in AZ) and the Oregon Coast.
Occasionally if I’m having trouble with insomnia, I cast my mind to the great intergalactic voids;
For example:
The quietest possible place: no gravitational field, no magnetic field, no muons, no chatter of wifi or cell phones. Just the cosmic background photons and a few neutrinos, perhaps…
One of my absolute favorite spots is a section of the Sky Trail in Point Reyes. On a typical foggy morning it’s a wonderful soundscape–the birdsong mixes with water dripping off the trees and when it’s not windy you can hear waves breaking on the beach a couple miles away. Large stretches of the trail were partially burned in the Woodward Fire in 2020 but the area is gradually coming back.
The Blue Ridge in North Carolina is the landscape I miss most. Going hiking on trails off of the Blue Ridge Parkway are some of my favorite memories. The smell of the mountains still haunts me. For years after moving to FL, I used to look for combinations of incense or scents that could duplicate the scents of the mountain environment, but it can’t replicate the experience of being there without the same weather. There’s really only about two months of the year where I prefer the weather in Fort Myers.
I also only prefer the weather in Florida for 2 months of the year. I prefer the smells for the month afterward, because up north that’s mud season, even though it coincides with good waterfall season. But up north you do have the fall season smell of fallen leaves.
My smell landscape oddly enough is forced air in old AC systems in old concrete buildings, partly because it takes place in the type of buildings I like, but also partly because it smells like comfortable temperature and unstressful days wandering hallways.
My landscape - the main border.
I love all kinds of landscapes, but the combination of rivers and mountains are my favorite.
(Down the street from our house):
Yes, looks like it! I’ve never been there, though. We like to bring picnics and dine on the ridge instead, especially near sunset ![]()
It is a pretty special place, especially for the urban dwellers there! We did the Three Dune Challenge a while back and enjoyed it, then sat by the sea big-ass lake for a picnic dinner. Quite a magical respite from the surrounding hustle and bustle.
It became a national park a few years ago, didn’t it (from former state park status)? Now I hear it’s super busy…
