I’d totally be on board with this, reminds me of the TV show Northern Exposure. I think it would be a dream gig for the teacher as well, as there would be plenty of parents kicking in volunteer hours and resources to help. It would take some careful management to avoid it turning into a petty tyrannical HOA though.

My opinions about children and parents.

People should have to apply to have children. The government should have control about who breeds. People think that it is a given right to have as many children as they want, and that everyone should pay for them. Many people just have kids, and take no responsibility.

There are way too many people on the planet, and in the country. why do we keep making copies?

look at the countries where they live in poverty. they keep making more people—why?

look at where people work as practically slaves… they make more people that will work as slaves there too----why?

China may have problems with a one child policy, but they did it, and it helped. The world needs population control.

For as often as people say this insanely ridiculous idea, it must not be that unpopular.

Because of this little thing called human nature. All animal nature really. If not for it, we wouldn’t even be here to talk about it.

My chief unpopular ones:

1. I’m for drug legalization. It amazes me that we’re repeating not just the same mistakes that we did with Prohibition, but using the same arguments.

2. I’ll be so glad when when the cafe racer trend dies out. Not that there aren’t some nice bikes being built, but it’s about 1% of the ones converted.

Religion is not only stupid and delusional but also has been responsible for a significant portion of the death, misery, and suffering mankind has undergone over the last several millennia, and any person who calls himself rational shames himself by practicing or believing in it.

On a personal level, I’m no fan of abortion, and I believe it can and should be reduced by increased access to birth control, but barring some crazy shit that will change everything, it will never come anywhere near being obsolete. Easy access for many women to the morning after pill has been the case for years now and that’s great, but it sure hasn’t made abortion unnecessary even for that group of women. If anyone ever wants elective abortion to be legal under any circumstances, there will be a non-zero number of fetuses being killed, even past the time you’re comfortable with it.

I see no reason to think that the government, which does just about everything poorly, would do this incredibly important, long-term, expensive task better than parents.

If government plays any role, it should not be in attempting to change human nature but ensure the best possible circumstances by governing well, which would ensure adequate resources and a good environment in which to raise its citizens.

Is this really THAT unpopular? At least in much of Western Europe, I get the feeling that many people agree that drugs should legalised. I certainly do, and so do most of my - overwhelmingly left-wing, urban and young - friends.

As to my most unpopular opinions, they often have to do with the overlap between science and society. I’m quite a big fan of GMOs, and think that if people were told the objective truth about them, they’d agree. The same applies - with some reservations - to nuclear energy, and even some forms of animal testing. Talking about stuff like this has made some of my friends quite angry

In the world we’re currently making, we’re desperately going to need GMO food and nuclear energy, and now is the time when we should be working on these things and perfecting them so they can be the stopgap to better things. Instead we’re just sticking our heads in the sand and pretending that the entire world can keep running without oil and without anything to realistically replace oil, and that the entire world can feed itself when climates change so much that the regular crops fail all over the world.

Family and friends I’ve discussed it with have had the same prohibition-era counter-argument - that once drugs are legalized,\*\* everyone \*\*will immediately become a junkie. The obvious follow-up - would you? - is always met with some blatherskite about how _they’ve_ got the strength of character (usually meaning their opiate of choice is religion) to avoid such pitfalls, but everyone else…

You had me until birth… if it’s 18 years old and still inside another person’s body they [the other person] should have the right to privately remove it in any way they so choose.

Once it is outside the womb it is under another jurisdiction and subject to the prevailing laws of the land… but if I were in charge, I’d probably give you some more “wiggle room” to fix your mistakes 😉

Video games were a lot more fun when rapid-fire was useful, controls were strictly standard or analog (not both), and you never needed more than 4 buttons. All the efforts to make things balanced and fair and take out all the cheapness and cheesiness and cheating and shortcuts and spamming etc. etc. have made modern video games a chore.

Also, modern video games are, on the whole, way too hard. Way, way too hard. The XBox 360 is the worst offender. Otomedius, Dance Dance Revolution Universe 3, or Virtua Tennis 2009 will make you cry. Don’t get me started on Dead or Alive.

Assassin’s Creed 3: Conner was a perfectly fine protagonist, and his abrasive attitude was completely natural given his life up to that point. Haytham Kenway had just the right amount of screen time, it wasn’t tragic when he died, and he was not in any way vindicated. The fighting was well done, really emphasizing Connor as a powerful but not invincible warrior. There’s tons to explore in Boston, New York, the Homestead, and the Frontier; Philadelphia would’ve been a nice addition but it was hardly necessary. The Revolution plays a major role from start to finish and is very tightly integrated into the main plot. The naval battles were kinda fun but not _that_ awesome; definitely don’t get the game just for that. The best part about the Homestead missions was that none of them were that hard and you got stuff from them. By far the worst things about the game were, in order: 1. having to win five board games against sickeningly difficult opposition to complete a guild requirement, 2. the impossible mission requirements (Whack two militiamen _and_ kill Thomas Hickey before he ices both of Washington’s bodyguards? Really?), and 3. convoys appearing completely at random, sometimes when you’re committed to something else.

Beavis and Butthead was an annoying, unfunny, aimless mess. No, it didn’t make a girl go after her brother with a blowtorch or whatever crap. That didn’t make it any less of a mess. Ren and Stimpy was arguably even worse. The _only_ reason they weren’t thrown on the scrap heap within a month was that they were cool at the time. The first couple of seasons of South Park were okay, the movie was pretty good, and everything else has been just depressing (but at least it’s out of the public eye now).

America’s Got Talent is the most incompetently produced show of _any_ stripe on American television right now. The voting should be anonymous, there should be separate categories so we don’t have a 10-year-old rapper going up against an acrobat troupe, and most importantly, while the performance is going on, CAMERA _ON THE PERFORMANCE_ WITH _NO CUTS_, AND **SHUT THE GODDAM HELL UP!** If you love Nick Cannon that much, give him his own 15-minute segment at the beginning of the show. And _no_ moronic irritating bickering between the judges. You are all equals, your opinions are equally valid, and your votes all count the same, _freaking deal with it!_

The notion that an incorrect decision needs to stand and cannot ever be corrected is absolutely the most ridiculous thing about sports and the main reason I can’t ever take them seriously. Any government or corporation that adopted such a ludicrous mindset would grind to a halt within three months. Look…it’s not a matter of life and death. The earth will not swallow you up if you give the gold medals to the right athletes or add a no-hitter to the record books. There’s no time limit on justice. Get it right.

The freakouts we have over breasts are simply insane (with “wardrobe malfunction” being Exhibit A). Between “bazongas” and “headlights” and “rack” and “underboob” and “side boob”, I’m not sure a lot of us could identify a vagina or clitoris to save our lives. And frankly, if male nipples are just fine, it’s sheer hypocrisy to go triple-banana nutsoid over a “nip slip”.

Blockbuster Video was a good thing and I was sad that it had to go. Yeah, it took out nearly all the local video stores, but most of them would’ve gone under anyway. I had no trouble at all with making the trip and returning movies on time. I don’t have the patience for Netflix…all the queues and selections and plans, and you gotta pay every month.

(Assuming this doesn’t kill the thread, I’ll get to the heavier stuff later.)
