Professional spectator sports are idiotic. Almost all non-classical music is painful to the ear. The private lives of actors should be private. Ideally, audiences shouldn’t even know the names of the people in the films they watch. The American Revolution was wrong. The U.S. should eliminate $1.00 bills in favour of $1.00 coins. The U.S. should establish a massive passenger rail network, and greatly decrease the number of private cars. It is immoral and hypocritical to be a Catholic unless you believe 100% of official church teaching. Splenda is perfectly safe and fine to consume. Saturated fat is perfectly fine and healthy food for humans. A lot of mental disorders (depression, adhd, autism) may be caused by a lack of good fat in the diet. Sugar should cost about 10 times what it does now. Your deduction for dependent children should be reduced if your children’s school attendance is less than 90%. Doctors notes and all that for long term or chronic illness. ---

I believe that for many people, depression can be beat by learning and applying better coping techniques and more productive world views. I fully believe that drugs do help many people, but mostly because they can help people get to the point where that essential mental work can be done, and if it is not done, the depression will keep coming back periodically. I believe that it will never be efficient to commute the way that we do, and that the price of individual transit is only going to rise and rise. People who do not factor this in to their housing decisions are idiots with only themselves to blame, and cities that do not plan for this are looking at disaster. If we do not plan for mass transit and transit-friendly cities now, we are going to be in bad shape in the coming years. It will be a painful transition. I believe that having children is one of the most fundamental human rights out there, one that predates any nation or even civilization itself. I believe basically everyone should have as many or as few children as they desire whenever they like, and nobody has any right to judge them for it. Furthermore, nobody in America is “too poor to have children.” Hunter-gathers who actually own nothing have children and it’s fine. If they have a loving and safe home, a child can handle anything America has to throw at them. I believe that class in American is huge, and largely undiscussed. We’ve just started having discussions about “the 1%,” but really there is relevant stuff here about all the little class divisions that make up our society. ---

As a Catholic, I automatically discount their teachings 100% re: sex and marriage as, order to be an “official” member of the Church (i.e., clergy), you must give up sex and marriage. Taking advice from the Church re: procreation is akin to asking a tone-deaf person their opinion on your piano playing. Sorry **Weeping Wyvern**. 😉 Given how [destructive they are to the environment](http://io9.com/5979891/domestic-cats-are-among-the-worst-invasive-species-and-could-be-destroying-ecosystems), all house cats should be banned and destroyed. There’s a lot of fuckin’ whiners on this board. Sometimes I want to post “PLEASE, JUST GROW THE FUCK UP, GAWDDAMMIT!” But that would be rude… 🙂 _Titanic_ was an awesome movie and deserved every Academy Award it received. 😛 ---

I don’t know if it’s unpopular, but I’m _so_, **so** glad to not have had a son. It seems to me, looking at my daughter’s travels through school, that the really fucked up and/or anti-social kids always are boys. Not saying girls can’t be fucked up or whatever, but they seem far more quiet about it. I also think I would have been a less effective father with a boy - far more harsh and unforgiving. ---

Suicide is an absolute, inalienable right - as long as the person has the mental capacity to understand death at least as well as does a normal 12 yr old, they have the competence to form a legally valid decision. Those unable to bring about their own deaths should have a health care worker come to them and give a barbiturate IV which would produce death i less than a minute. I seem to have stumbled onto a common analgesic + hypnotic which has a long-lasting, much stronger that anticipated effect (my Doc. would not knowingly given me such a combination without telling me, and the druggist who fills them constantly lectures me not to mix the benzos - but has never said a word about these 2). Will try a different combo tonight. ---

Homeschooling should be illegal. It allows underqualified parents to make lopsided or inadequate “curriculums,” fill their kids’ heads with extremist nonsense without any moderating outside perspectives, and get away with abuse more easily. Yes, obviously not all families are like this, but the risks are too great. The Germans have the right idea by banning it. ---

Very new poster here. have been reading these boards quite a while. Love this topic because my opinions are quite unpopular among my acquaintances. Here’s a few… beer used to taste good lots of years ago. Cannot endure stand-up comedians that yell. The idea of colonizing Mars is backward; I think the reverse is true. We are the Martians. The rate our planet is drying, Mars is what we’ll look like in the future. The terminally ill and far gone nursing home residents should have a choice on whether they can cash in. also every state should have suicide centers where if your living & mental circumstances are crappy, you can take a test (qualifier) the state can help you escape. I wish we could lose the pennies, every purchase seems to end in .06, or .01. Some fat folks are ok with it because it serves as a psychological wall. beer isn’t too awful when mixed w/ tomato juice and spices. ---

People shouldn’t be proud of anything they didn’t personally have a hand in. Respect or admiration, sure, but not pride. Most Beatles fans are obnoxious. Using the wrong spelling of there/their/they’re is never accidental. I don’t see what’s so terrible about nihilism. It’s extremely irritating when people ask “why” instead of “how” when discussing the natural sciences. It’s not that difficult to recognize sarcasm on the internet. Mental disorders are over-diagnosed. Pretty soon “having a personality” will be considered a disorder. “Let’s see you do better” as a response to negative feedback is just stupid. Sorry, but I don’t need to be a good singer/director/cook/painter/etc to recognize a bad one. Star Trek characters commit suicide every time they use a teleporter. Deism is not a religion. High school (in the States) should be optional and require passing entrance exams. Vocational schools should be expanded. There are far too many restrictions on GM research and testing.
