I’ve had the nickname **Cliffy** for close to 10 years now; given by a fraternity brother while I was in college. It’s too bad, because while I have grown to like the name, people were just starting to call me **Elvis** before that happened, which I liked better. (I had long sideburns at the time.) Elvis was used by enough people that it almost certainly would have stuck had Cliffy not come along. Also in college the tuba section gave each other nicknames every year and published them in the school paper. Most were throwaways, but I still am called **Wooden Indian** and **STD** from time to time. (The latter because I made the mistake of telling a friend that I had gotten mono from my girlfriend a year earlier.) Members of my family (especially my dad) call me **A.Z.** , which is an abbreviation of my first name, Alexander. (Alec-Zander) Also **Aze** , which is how you might pronounce “AZ.” –Cliffy ---

Most of the people I knew when I was younger weren’t really nickname people, so I didn’t get any names until high school. That’s when they really went overboard. **Jess** : This is mostly online because of my username. Easier to type Jess than JessEnigma. **Jessie** : A common nickname, of course. (I don’t like it because of the ending “e” sound of my last name.) The guys in band with me gave it to me because “Jessica is too feminine to yell on the field”. :rolleyes: Thankfully, that one died out after my freshman year when the seniors in my section graduated. When I see one of them every now and then, he still calls me Jessie. **Kangaroo, Hop-a-long, more “jumping” names** : Two years ago, I sprained my ankle while I was on a school trip. I spent most of the rest of the trip hopping around on my good leg to get around if there wasn’t a wheelchair. My eternally charming band director took this opportunity to expand his range of nicknames for me to a higher level. **Thug** : My band director hires instructors from the local college to teach during marching band season. The guys in my section thought it would be really funny to introduce me to our instructor as “Thug”. I’m not entirely sure how they came up with that one, but it was definitely different. Saw my instructor a few weeks ago. He still remembered me as the Thug. I’m touched. jessica ---

I used to have **The Elusive Unabomber** as my nickname. But it was too long to yell at me, so everyone just changed it back to Satan. ---
