What are your specific rituals for navigating shopping and other essential public spaces?

I always use the self-checkout if it’s turned on, just so one less person is carrying their germs near the cashier. Different chains seem to have different policies about when thy open it up, which matters to me because I hit the stores first thing in the morning. Giant has their self-checkout open from the get-go; I don’t know when Safeway turns theirs on, but it’s not anytime during the first hour they’re open.

NJ suburbs.

Mask & gloves way before most people began wearing them. Peel them off and place in trash can before I go inside. Scarf and glasses too but I don’t throw those out, just leave them on my porch. Same with any jacket/sweater/boots. Insisted on working from home early on and was absolutely willing to be let go for doing so. Leave the house approximately once every 2 weeks. I use self-checkout. I do my best to stay 6 feet away while in the store but idiots block the aisles or will run up behind you or reach over you so it’s not always possible. Many stores will not allow you to bring your own bags now. Refuse to handle cash other than what I already have in my wallet, it’s all “keep the change” if I must use cash. I pay by card whenever possible.

I took this very seriously before most people did and have acted accordingly. I do not go to extremes or drive myself crazy.

The only place I ever go to is the supermarket, where I always use a mask. I go early in the morning, where it’s open only to high-risk people, of which I’m one.

I go with a list of “must-buy” items, but go up or down every aisle, picking up anything extra I might want. This way, our food supply doesn’t get into a rut.

When I get home I wipe down anything that needs to go into the refrigerator or freezer. Everything else remains in the supermarket bags in the corner of the kitchen floor, for four days, before being put away.
