What bicycle do you ride?

Here you go, ITR: http://members.aol.com/biketune/flat.htm

Zenster, that’s a damn nice ride for a rice-rinser.

Got any pics of it online?

[Pa Kettle]

Gonna get around to that one of these days, Ma.

1998 Trek XX2000
1997 Cannondale R-600*
1983 Dyno ProPerformer
198? White Lightning Custom (which I could never ride now, the ultra-lightweight frame will only support ~120-140 rider)

*: primary bike.

I’ve only got two bikes, but they serve me well.

  1. Trek 830 Mountain Track. Swapped the knobbies for road slicks, slapped on some fenders and a rack, and it is my all-around commuting/recreation/ride-to-the-grocery-store bike.

  2. A Raleigh 12 speed racer from…1984 or 85 I think? This bike is great, if a little heavy by today’s standards. I’ve got countless thousands of miles on it and never had a lick of trouble. It’s taken me on tours, centuries, and morning training rides for years. I sometimes think about replacing it with something newer but I can’t bring myself to do it.

Interesting. I ride an old Nishiki Cresta GT of unknown vintage (best guess? 1985. Bought it used in 1995). It’s cro-moly, touring style, and does me just fine for light or heavy riding. I’ll be taking it on it’s 4th MS-150 (escape to the Lake) in June.

Melton touring bike. Can pick the whole bike up with my pinky.

Most comuting: 1-speed built out of a 195? Raleigh colt (rootbeer/ white with the kinked toptube) with drum-brakes (yay!) and an ancient brooks saddle that should no longer hold weight but does. Squeaky dinosaur thing.

Rain-bike: 197? trek road bike, sun-tour parts, radonneur bars.

Also a Bike Friday ‘Crusoe’ (like their Llamas (I think) but with cantis) and an ancient Dunelt I found in the trash-- chain guard and fenders and everything, that I want to fix up and take to the Netherlands to use as an echt Oma-fiets.

zzyzyvzzyza: how do you like the Dahon?

There are many more in the household, but these are the only ones that fit me. Husband right now commutes on a heinous looking metallic LILAC and chrome Lotus as a fixie, which is just too macho for me (perhaps he feels riding a lilac bike is ok if it’s fixed gear, thus defending his manhood?).

A late 80’s Raleigh Technium and a '97 Diamond Back V-Link.

Decent for some city riding, but waaaay too upright for much else. I also don’t care much for the gearing (too light). Still, it’s useful for those times when i need something that folds. If i needed it more, though, i’d prolly invest in Friday. A friend of mine toured all over Europe on their Air Glide and said it was just like a full-sized touring bike.

2000 Trek 4500 hardtail- 2001 LX crankset, bontrager valiant rims, xtr hubs, Geax sedona tires, and the rest is stock Alivio/Acera crapola.

It’s a work in progress though- I intend to go 9 speed before too much longer since 8 spd parts are becoming somewhat scarce.

For commuting/road, Kestrel 200sci.
For playing in the dirt, K2 Zed x.
For pretending to be Lance, steel Bianchi limited converted to fixed gear.

[slight highjack]

I’ve been considering getting into biking lately. I’m looking for some excercise and have been walking but it’s not exactly my cup of tea.

I’m not sure what a good bike for me would be. I think I want something in a mountain bike style. The caveat is I’m currently very overweight (spare me the fatty on a bike jokes, I’m trying to do something about it). I need something sturdy and will mainly be riding on flat trails. I’m not looking for something with 20 gears - a one or three speed would probably do me nicely.

Is there anything on the market that fits those parameters?

We prefer “Clydesdales” thankyouverymuch

I am a pretty big guy and I strongly recommend going with parts that are not too “trick” or light as we do tend to snap them!

My short list includes ChrisKing anything, Magura hydraluic brakes (the first time I hit them hard, I went over the bars! Let me tell you that is no mean feat:D ), and Bontrager most everything else.

I don’t remember the URL but look up Keith Bontragers’ website. He has a philosophy that meshes very nicely with my own- he eschews most frou frou trendy crap and goes straight for what works. He makes the best Clydesdale rims around.

I don’t mean to hijack this again but…

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on rolf vs. mavic wheels. I got some 8-speed :frowning: shifters from a friend pretty cheap and I need to get a back wheel. Right now I’m looking at a mavic cosmos but I’ve always wanted the rolf pro or comps. I’m pretty short on cash now, and I’d need the whole wheel, cogs, hub, spokes, the works. If I’m going to start racing soon, would it be better to get the mavic as an 8 spd and then upgrade to 9spd later, or just wait a month or 2 and buy 9 spd shifters etc. etc.?

Futhermore, my rear derailer is a durace, I think it was on a 9 spd before I bought it, is that going to work?

Ugg, this 8 vs 9 spd is like PC vs. mac!

Help me please!

Road bike - 1998 Lemond Buenos Aires

Mountain Bike - 1990? Raleigh Something

Old Road Bike - 1985 Lotus Something (mostly sits in basement)

I ride a Metro Uptown Express that I bought used for $50.

Just replacing a tire that got slashed yesterday cost me half that.

1979 Peugeot competition 12 speed.
I have woolens too.
Wool shorts with chamois patches in the crotch, and wool jerseys with pockets on the lower back section.

I walked into a bike store like that once and the guy at the counter practically stared holes through me.I felt ashamed and apologized for my throwback appearance, and he really couldn’t do any better at first then to blurt out that I was one of “the originals”.Took me a few minutes to realize it,but the guy was in awe.

BTW No way am I worth that, but it was funny to be an instant celebrity!
