What Board Games are you playing?

At a con I went to last year, some guys had set up all three boards, and were playing all of them at the same time. They had to fill terraforming tracks on each board to end the game.

My family has fallen in love with the Wingspan series: a machine-builder that features all the birds of the world (or at least one continent per box). Absolutely addictive, and the illustrations of each bird are just gorgeous.

Surprisingly, to me, it’s by the same company that’s made Scythe - which a group of us spent literally weeks trying to figure out. Never did get a handle on it and eventually just gave up.

An American version of Big Boss was finally released by Funko Games. It could be described as Acquire but on a looped line as a game board as opposed to a grid. Unlike Acquire, it is impossible to run out of money.

There is also a new version of Kingmaker (formerly by Avalon Hill). This version comes with new rules for shorter games and a solitaire version.

Kids are home for spring break, so I got to play Too Many Bones and Food Chain Magnate this weekend!

Recently I played Terraforming Mars, good game.

Yes, and it has a very good app on the iPad! We play that almost every week.

I saw also Steam version for PC.

In college (many moons ago), I spent many pleasant hours playing backgammon (timeless classic 2-player board game), and Mille Bornes (a multi-player cutthroat road race card game). Both have excellent game play and can be played in reasonably short time periods. Sometimes the oldies are not just goodies; they’re treasures that remind us that the best things in life don’t need a power button.

Coup-fourré!

We (my game group) likes the follow-up Ares Expedition. Turns are simultaneous, so it speeds up the game significantly (at least at higher player counts). It is also easier to get the cards you need.

The original is in Beta on boardgamearena.
If you get one expansion, get Prelude – it speeds up the game. Hellas/Elysium adds some map variety. I’m meh on Venus and Colonies – have not played Turmoil.

If you enjoy Terraforming Mars you may want to check out Ark Nova. Similar giant decks with icons but you are building on your own board rather than a communal one.

If we get four players who know the game and want to play Ark Nova asynchronously, I’d be glad to host it on BGA. NW19P has already said he’s up for it.

Been on a Stonemaier kick lately. The aforementioned Wingspan has been a family fave, and Euphoria has been popular with the guys. I picked up Red Rising (based on the book series) for my brother, but haven’t had a chance to play it yet.

May I recommend a house rule for Mille Bornes? Any two remedies are wild. A player may discard any two remedies to replace the one needed. A player only draws one card to replace the discards and plays with one fewer card for the rest of the game.

I played Earth, Revive, Century Spice Road, and Obsession this weekend.

And finished in last place in all of them. You’d think with the amount of board games I play, I’d be better at it.

That is a great lineup of games!

It means you’re part of a top-quality group of gaming friends. (You are buying the beer, right? )

I haven’t played Mille Bornes for a long time, but that sounds like a good house rule to me.

(*) I tried to interest my young adult daughters and their friends in Mille Bornes (and backgammon, etc.), to no avail. They prefer million-button video games that aggravate my arthritis and cause seizures.

I’m not a big fan of board games. I don’t pay attention, I forget the rules, I don’t strategize well.

That said, we got “Mists over Carcassonne” a little while ago and I really enjoy it! It’s cooperative which appeals to me much more than the regular game (though you can play competitive or as an expansion in regular Carcassonne). And the little blue ghosts are just adorable.

My family has a couple of other cooperative games which I like too, but not as much as that one; Castle Panic, and Magic Maze.

My husband likes the super complex games with 468338 little bits of cardboard but I just can’t play them. Too stressful.

Funny, we just watched a review of it a couple of days ago, and one thing they said was that the expansion pack makes this a way better game. We’re considering picking those up…

We only have the original and have never played all levels of difficulty. I’ve never looked for an expansion pack! Something to look for, perhaps!
