What Brands Have You Given Up On And Why?

I try to avoid anything and everything owned by Rupert Murdoch/News Corp/20th Century Fox - on ethical grounds. He is a complete scumbag. I know indirectly I probably feed the monster in some fashion - part of my payments to others ending up going to him - but I try.

Same with RyanAir - if only they fly there then I don’t go there. Another scumbag.

My dad used to love Land’s End so much he’d pay $50+ a pop to have them ship boat shoes and similar crap to Oman. No more.

Maybe you haven’t been in an Olive Garden lately, but there’s still a huge difference. It’s just that Carrabba’s used to be great and is now just okay, while Olive Garden used to be okay and is now utterly inedible.

What immoral dickbag stuff is EA doing? I haven’t really been paying much attention to the industry lately.

Apropos of nothing, when we bought our fridge and dishwasher at Home Depot the salesguy talked us out of Maytags (and into a much cheaper GE). He said they had 13 Maytag returns sitting in the back and one of all the other brands combined.

Having said that, the GE dishwasher is pretty shitty.

I’m not sure what this means. they are separate plugs.

I’m definitely disappointed in my Apple computers- iMac and MacBook Pro. The hard drives died in both. Later on my MacBook Pro died a few months after my applecare expired so I don’t want to take it in until I’ve scraped together a few hundred bucks. Pissed.

I must have misunderstood; I stand corrected.

Snap on Tools, about 10 years ago I got tired of paying the price and found I get just as good if not better service out of the cheap harbor freight tools. Thier 12 point sockets used to be unbeatable as were there wrenches. They still have a better selection of shapes and sizes and specialty tools that I sometimes have to buy but I only buy them when I can’t find the same thing in something else. Besides that my tools don’t get stolen as often without the big name on them.

Slightly off topic but I wonder why on earth they do this? There’s a facial moisturiser which I assume is still around, although I haven’t bought it for decades. In Australia it was called Oil of Ulan. In the US and the UK, it was called Oil of Olay or Oil of Ulay not sure which name applied to which country but the products were identical (I bought some in the UK when I was there).

NB I may even have mixed up what we called it here but I do know that there were three similar but slightly different names for exactly the same moisturiser. Very odd.

In Mexico, it’s called Oil of ¡Olé!

Speaking of Murdoch, I loved it when columnist Mike Royko left the Chicago Sun-Times when Murdoch bought it. He moved to the rival Chicago Tribune, saying “no self respecting fish would be caught wrapped in one of Murdoch’s papers.”

They’re on the same side of the phone now. The headphone jack used to be on top near the power button, now it’s on the bottom near the charging port.

nm…

Without having actually held or closely examined the device in question, this arrangement does strike me as just a bit awkward, but not horrendously so. It would only affect a few of those who like to use the device with headphones while it is charging, e.g. on a nightstand or table. It doesn’t seem like a dealbreaker, though I do recall that some people complained about it.

I like that best of all.

I have also given up on Levi brand jeans. Kirkland jeans from Costco are much better made and about a quarter of the price.

Whaaaaa?

Nope sorry the lighting connector is in the center, the headphone port is off to the left.
