Came to the Straight Dope from a “Best Internet Sites” link, and after reading back through the columns archives, clicked on an-impossible-to-pass-up Threadspotting link to “Evil Nazi Groundhogs”. Joined up soon after, when I wanted to post to one of the threads I was reading. And have just realized that was 10 years ago this past Sunday.
We could digitally make out. Then all the guys can digitally chuckle like Beavis and Butthead.
I heard someone who was supposed to be Cecil on The Allan Handelman Show. I think one of the topics was “why does tin foil in your mouth make your teeth feel funny.”
I’m new to the Straight Dope this year - was trying to find out who the heck Alvin Tostig was and why Bernie Taupin thought he needed to end up in a lyric. Then I learned all about the warm smell of colitas, and well, it was just too fun to leave…
I was a regular reader of Cecil’s column in a local alternative paper (the Montreal Mirror). Until it wasn’t there any more. Eventually, I googled The Straight Dope hoping to find his column online and, mirabile dictu, I did!
There was an article in the Sunday local paper about those laced together sneakers that you sometimes see dangling from power/telephone lines, along with various explanations/legends about why people toss them up there. The article cited one of Cecil’s columns that answered a reader’s question about the subject, so I decided to check out the main SD website and, after poking around a bit, discovered the SDMB as well. Since then, I’ve often inadvertently come across the SDMB while Googling stuff.
Googling led me to the columns, which I read for a few months before ever discovering the board. When I did, I joined and the community has regretted it ever since.
