What can't you get by where you are?

Of all the stuff I can’t get in Baghdad, what I miss most (after my wife) is chinese food. Man, we sit around and talk about it like guys talk about women.

Ah, the joys of living in Crabcake Central. There’s a great place not 10 minutes away that makes the best crabcakes. All lump crabmeat, and no filler. I’ll think of you next time I have one.
: smug :

I came in to post the same thing. All of the places you mentioned are great. Heck, I even had the best sea bass I’ve ever eaten in my life a few months ago at Matsuhisa in Aspen. You can find good seafood all over the place here.

In in BC right now, so:
Decent Mexican food-- how I long for a chile relleno burrito (yes, fusion but brilliant)
American microbrews
various Belgian stuff (particular beers, horse sausage, stoverij, good showarma, fry sauces, Belgian-style sandwiches)
various Hawaii things (lau-lau, poki, and guavas, mostly)
Trader Joes
Liquor and beer in regular grocery stores
The early evening replay of yesterday’s Jon Stewart and Colbert
NPR

When I leave BC I’ll miss:
Tim Hortons ‘Canadian maple doughnut’
poutine
the cheap price for Unibroue beers
CBC
Colorful money and good coinage

Well bless your heart, aren’t you just the sweetest! I’ll be thinking of you, too.

I’ve found a place where I can buy lump backfin and make my own, but it’s just not the same.

I forgot to add chili-cheese burgers from Original Tommy’s.

Was the owner shot?

Strangely enough, I cannot find Chile Cheese Frito’s anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic area. Whenever I go home to Idaho I find them. I had them when I went to college in Michigan (having recently gone back to Michigan, I can attest that they are still available there). I can even get them when I go to visit my wife’s family in North Carolina. But for the love of God, there seems to be no place in Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Northern Virginia that sells them. It’s incredibly frustrating.

I am from Nebraska and a few of things I cannot get here in Nevada are:

[ul]Runza, a fast food restaurant that serves hamburger, cheese, onions etc inside of a baked bread. Sort of like a ‘hot pocket’ is way freakin’ better. I always make a point to eat there when I am back in Nebraska.[/ul]
[ul]Martha Gooch brand mac and cheese. Way better than Kraft mac and cheese.
[/ul]
[ul]A decent beer cheese sauce. At least I figured out how to make that so I can have it when I get a craving[/ul]

Good Tex-Mex food, plus Bluebell ice cream – these should be a good indicator of where I’m from.

Sweet Tomatoes, which I’ve only ever had in Florida whilst visiting in-laws, and Trader Joe’s.

Either one would make me SO happy, and both … sigh

I would love a Wegmans. I would love kimmelweck rolls and to buy a beef on weck sandwich with loganberry to drink. I crave Mighty Taco lately. It has nothing to do with actual mexican food but it’s still good.

May I please have some big fat french fries that aren’t coated in a weird batter? Why is everyone selling those now? They are gross.

From SoCal I miss Zankou Chicken and their extraordinary garlic sauce. I miss Fish Grill, Del Taco, Togos, In-N-Out and Baja Fresh. LA spoiled me rotten for junky food.

I am grateful that we moved 3000 miles but still get to have Trader Joes, though.

Damn near everything. The closest McDonald’s or Wendys is 16 miles, and Pizza Hut is 30 miles the other direction. I can get to a short handful of Mom-n-Pop places within 10 miles, though.

I know I’ve seen Chili Cheese Fritos somewhere around here. If I remember where, I’ll let you know.

Yeah, I know what “Bless your heart” means when it’s said in that tone.
If you ever get to Baltimore, we’ll go out for crabcakes, my treat.

Deal! I grew up there, my brother lives in Locust Point, my folks live just a little outside the city, and the company I work for is based there. I get in January 7. Somewhere in Fells Point?

I’ll get the drinks. :stuck_out_tongue:

I never see any of those Coffee Mate holiday creamers around here: I don’t know why I want to try pumpkin flavored coffee, but I do. Egg nog creamer is another flavor I haven’t seen. I think there are two other “holdiay” creamers.

the fuss in the Wal-Mart toy department

Locally, we can only get them in the canisters, not bags. Look further down the chip aisle (probably near wherever it is you Marylanders keep your Pringles).

An Indian Takeaway.

So many Indian people live in my area that there’s just no call for one. Plenty of good Indian restaurants but sometimes I just want to phone out for something. :frowning:

Coffee ice cream

I’d add Eclipse Coffee Syrup but I found that they’d been bought out (by Autocrat if I remember correctly) and it just wasn’t the same stuff anymore so it’s no longer something I can’t get WHERE I am, it’s something I can’t get WHEN I am… which is probably another thread in and of itself.
