What children's books are you reading?

Yes! The image of Lewis in the tunnel with his back to Mrs. Izzard’s Hand of Glory scared the crap out of me when I was a kid, and is still good for a shudder.

I haven’t read Julie in years, but I rather liked it. I think it’s one of those books that’s far more disturbing to adults than it is to the target age group. The first time I read it, I remember thinking, “Whoah, I can’t believe Mom let me read that!” but then I didn’t really think much more about it. The second time, when I was much older and fully understood the implications, it disturbed me so much I’ll never read it again.

I want to find copies of Calico Captive and The Witch Of Blackbird Pond. I don’t know if they’re still in print, but they made me fall in love with historical costuming. Read them in the 8th grade, I think. I read Julie earlier. She runs away because of attempted rape, right? We had to read it in the 6th grade, for school. Now I think about it, that’s pretty harsh for a 11- 12 year old.

The thing that always really, really scared me from Bellairs’ books was one scene (I think it’s in The Curse Of The Blue Figurine) when the main character was walking home at night, and he sees something blowing along the pavement towards him. He thinks it’s newsprint, and then realises it’s a death mask. Aagh!

I can’t remember how many I read. They blur into one big feeling of fear.

The Young Wizards series by Diane Duane… geared toward teens, modern fantasy like… a more “realistic” Harry Potter or something. They have a community and list of books Here

I really need a sig…
