Interesting. I didn’t know they made that distinction. I suspect, however, that it’s akin to the JWs saying they are not a part of “Christendom.” If that Assemblies of Yahweh group is the one that used to be run by Jacob O. Meyer, I believe they had very much of the “we alone are the one true religion” mentality.

So much of religion just baffles me.
Pluto is no longer a planet. But that does not change any bit of it’s reality past present and future. In all the fantastic reality or myth of Jesus. What does it matter the name?

Nerds. Nerds that nitpick to absurdity. They exist in all realms. Attempting to make reality fit their narrow self importance as arbiters of reality. Power mongers, who do the same.

A guy named Jesus or whatever, would wreck your prideful temple I think.

**Moderator Note**

I’m not clear what your point is, but it’s certainly not appropriate to General Questions. Please confine the discussion to the question in the OP.

More or less.

Jehovah is derived from combining the vowels of Adonai with YHWH because the Jews were so reluctant to pronounce the name of God that they forgot how. ([Cite](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jehovah).) Jesus is the Greek transliteration of Joshua/Isaiah.

The first and third Hebrew letters in the Tetragrammaton, the four-letter Name of God, correspond most closely to the English letters Y and W. In Latin, the letters for those sounds look like J and V. But of course, the English pronunciations of the letters that look like that have no resemblance to the Latin pronunciations. So there’s no reason whatsoever to pronounce the Name of God as “Jehovah”.

Joshua is English.

His proper name is Isa ibn Maryam.

> In Islam, Jesus (Arabic: عِيسَى ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ, romanized: ʿĪsā ibn Maryam, lit. 'Isa, son of Maryam') is believed to be the penultimate prophet and messenger of God and the Messiah. He is also considered to be the prophet sent to guide the Children of Israel (Banī Isra'īl), being revealed in the third holy book called the Injīl.

JWs, on the other hand, acknowledge that “Yahweh” may be a more accurate pronunciation of the divine name than “Jehovah,” which is an amalgam of the consonants YHWH and the vowels for _Adonai_, the Hebrew word for “Lord.” They say that they prefer to retain the pronunciation, “Jehovah,” because it is the version of the name that most people are familiar with, though in modern times, I think it’s just the pronunciation that people will tend to identify with their group. A barnd name, if you will.

It’s not just this name that the vowels were left out of - old Hebrew left them out of all words. I remember one _History of the Universe_ comic book that said there was no way to tell which vowels were originally used. Yahoo-Wahoo was listed as one possibility that couldn’t be ruled out.

And how would those be pronounced?

For Yeshua I’m thinking: rhymes with “CHESS-shoe-uh”

For Iesous I’m thinking: eee-YAY-sous (sous rhymes with “moose”)

For Iesus I’m thinking: eee-YES-sous (same pronunciation of “sous”)

Is that about right?

At the risk of being a pedant, I don’t believe we really have any good sources on how the accents in that region at that time would have even been spoken, and given how common Greek and Latin would have been, isn’t it basically something of a complete toss-up as to how he would have pronounced his own name, even given the way it was written down thereafter?
