“Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day”
First heard of it in The Children of Green Knowe by L. M. Boston, and heard a CD of it soon afterward.Oh, yeah, that’s on my mom’s favorite Christmas album, which she played until the record wore out and then, many years later, managed to find a new copy of it. It still sounds funny to me to hear those songs without the record repeating itself.
Sacred: O Magnum Mysterium (Lauridson)
Carol: Candlelight Carol (Rutter) It may be very recent, but it’s got everything I love in a Christmas Carol.
Sacred song: Mary, Did You Know? Not really a carol, but not secular by any means. This version is the shiz. The best thing the group’s ever done, and that is saying quite a LOT.
Secular song: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (the original from the movie) Judy Garland had the most beautiful voice. <sigh>
It might have been Loreena McKennitt, she has a lovely version, but I like everything she does.
Her “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is…amazing.
I’ve always loved Ring Christmas Bells and In Dulci Jubilo.
Stille Nacht, as sung by my father, who died in 1972.
Check out this link. I forgot about this carol til you mentioned it. I still remember the words. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FYVaw6sDcs
Many years ago I was at a science fiction convention in Seattle(I forget which one), and about 1 am on a Saturday night/Sunday morning I wandered into a filk circle and sat down on the floor next to a woman holding a guitar. When it came her turn to pick a song from the book o’ filk or play something of her own, Meg Davis picked up her guitar and sang “Other People’s Children”, and if I am ever lucky enough to sit in a circle with her again, I will request that she play it.
A lot of us will be getting particularly emotional listening to “I Believe in Father Christmas” this year. R.I.P. Greg Lake.
I just checked her on YouTube, and while she’s certainly the sort of thing I appreciate, I’m not sure I like the liberties she took with the tune. The one I was thinking of was done straight, just very well.
I would dearly love to hear “O Holy Night” sung by a girl or young woman, with no frou-frou styling. i.e., no scooping, no forced vibrato, no dramatic orchestra and cymbal crashes. Just a sincere heart and hardly any training.
It’s a song that can bring me to tears, even though I’m not even Christian. Something about the 'thrill of hope" part I guess.
I too love “Wonderful Christmastime.” I have a picture-sleeve 45rpm of it.
I like “Girls’ School” better, though.
DSYoungEsq: That “Magnum” you linked is absolutely stunning. I’m kind of partial to the song by composer Victoria of the same name though.
Oh holy night by Bryan Setzer.
“Stray Cat Strut” Brian Setzer? This I gotta hear, brb.
Nice rendition on the organ, to be sure, but I’m seeking an SATB (or conceivably SSAA or TTBB) choral performance, or perhaps a great soloist with backing vocalists.
How about this version by Tomas Luis de Victoria, as performed by my high school choir?
Heh Look upthread one post!
the bad religion Christmas album…when me and my nephew heard about it we expected the usual social/political sarcastic snark that’s the hall mark of bad religion just disguised for xmas …
Nope they sang it straight just did the music in their style …
Ive gave the cd to people who don’t like punk or Christmas music and they’ve loved it…
