Then again, their complimentary coffee mug, worn upside down with a piece of string attached to the bottom of the mug, makes a handy-dandy fez. (They have to provide the chinstrap, though.)

I think they just call them hats for lack of a better word. I’ve always kinda thought like **hamlet** –that Moderator Haberdashery is handed down from On High, and it glows a lot. But it’s also like a Mood Halo–it changes color according to the temperment of the moderator at any particular moment. Maybe a nice, cool teal if the moderator is just doing mundane stuff, like moving a thread, and bolts of silvery lightning if they’re honked at you.
Oh, and you know those funky hats with the cupholders on them? I think the ones the mods have dispense M&M’s from one side and alcohol from the other.

I must not be very creative, because I always thought they were just regular ol’ ballcaps with the Straight Dope logo on 'em, kind of like those corporate-advertising freebies they hand out at the company picnic . . . probably black or navy blue.

I always assumed it was a Fez that was slipped on the head when moderator/admin type duties called.
Perhaps a nice pink one.

I heard they _used_ to use tan berets, but after the Monica Lewinsky story and that whole “army uniform scandal” that broke out this year, they switched over to a nice, pink Jackie-O style pillbox for everyday wear, with one of those tall, military-school/drum majorette things with the big feather for formal occasions. I’ve heard a rumor about a black hood for bannings, but I don’t like to speculate.

Wow. I never imagined that there’d be this many responses to this thread. Neat.
Personally, my mental vision of the Mod Hat was closest to **Edwardina** ’s idea, the corporate-logo-esque type of ballcap that they’ve all got sitting around. I like all these ideas though. But sadly, it looks as though we won’t be getting the word from on high. The mods must be watching us speculate and laughing, just like **marble** said. Sigh.
