What will be the downfall of Facebook, and what will be the characteristics of the Next Big Thing that could replaced Facebook?

Pretty self-exlplanatory question, but based on the assumption that nothing lasts forever, Facebook replace MySpace, which replaced Yahoo Profiles. What is the straw that will break FB, and what will a successor need to do in order to win the market? Or is FaceBook now too big to fail?

It will be all over for Facebook when humans wise up and are no longer manipulated by advertisements. One can dream, anyway. Sites like SDMB would be the future where the kind donors give us a commons where we can kick it. Best of all, no direct posting of pictures and gifs allowed.

Believe it or not, kids today are not using Facebook, I’ve been told it’s for “old people”. Twitter, Youtube, Instagram and Snapchat, etc… are increasing the go to social media platforms for youth so Facebook may just age out.

To answer that question, I need to know what it is that Facebook isn’t doing that could give rise to a new super app. What I see is, “nothing”. Facebook has words, pictures, videos, and a real time function for people to use while they are actually at an event. The insulation provided by its public/friends structure and the ability to target just specific friends for specific posts is very good. It’s birthday and event notifications are very helpful. I just can’t imagine at this point what new app could show up and say, “Hey, look what I can do that Facebook can’t!”

This. Which means the next true replacement social medium will be urine stains and scratch markings on trees & prominent rocks, perhaps the occasional symbolic token of welcome or ward. The “Like” button will be replaced with an offer of comfort; frowny emojis will be replaced by a spear in the chest.

Life will be simpler.

My college girl says Facebook is not cool anymore. They use Instagram and another one I can’t remember. I have a sneaky suspicion they know about the _it_ thing better than me.

I’m pretty sure some ladies on Tinder only join to get people to follow them on Snapchat or Intsagram.

it’s not about what it can and can’t do, it’s about trends. To backup what others are saying, my 13 year old daughter has no interest in Facebook. It is for “old people”, her parents and grandparents etc.

Facebook has not been cool for young people for years.

However, it does provide a useful service that young people don’t need as much at the time, but they may grow into.

As you graduate from HS, then college, and then move away to different places, it is a really convenient way to see what is going on in the lives of dozens of friends and acquaintances.

For sure, not everyone wants that, but a lot of people do.
ETA analogy: You know what else isn’t cool to teenagers? Minivans. But give them 15 years and 1/3 of them will be driving them.

Facebook isn’t cool _because_ we are there. Just like in real life, my daughter doesn’t want to hang out in the same places I do, where I can see everything she does or says.

You know what I miss? The days of AOL instant messenger, back in the high school days when all my friends would be on it every night, them were the days. Maybe there is some older generation out there that is wistful for the days of the carrier pigeon.

Once the kids figure out their grandparents are on Instagam, there will be something new. Note to kids: Hey, your grandparents are on Instagram.

My pre-teen nieces do not do Facebook, but they are all over Instagram and YouTube.

I keep hearing this, but I work in a public high school, and all the students are on Facebook all the time. My youngest daughter just graduated from a different high school, and same thing there. Both of my daughters use Facebook to keep in touch with their old friends from our old school before we moved here. I think what’s true is it’s become something they just do rather than talking about it. Unless they can’t connect to Facebook for some reason, then they think the whole Internet is down.

Sorry, it’s a fact that teens have been trending away from Facebook over the last few years, your particular sphere is just behind that trend.
