It’s a long story, but basically, she has become dissatisfied with our relationship because she is an increasingly devout Christian while I’m increasingly agnostic. (We’re compatible in most other ways, but this is becoming a dealbreaker for her.) A week ago, she told me she was putting a temporary halt to the relationship so she and I can both figure things out. She’s been pretty silent since. I’m getting a sense that in the next month or two she’ll probably arrange an in-person meeting to inform a breakup. So I bought her customized gifts on Amazon, for that meeting in advance to end things on a high note, since she likes those. Of course, chances are she might decide not to break up either, in which case giving a gift is always nice anyway for its own sake. ---

Coming home from Portland my wife and I stopped at the outlet stores in Woodburn. While she shopped Torrid I shopped Le Creuset. I got: - A salt and pepper grinder set and a little teak trivet for them to sit in. - A 14oz coffee mug. - A spider strainer. I was tempted to get a new dutch oven but I resisted. I have a stained and chipped Lodge that’s been faithful to me for 15+ years but is now past the end of its useful life so I don’t use it much anymore… and… uh… well… dammit, I should have picked up a dutch oven. We got lunch at Olive Garden in Eugene. Expensive AF for mediocre food, but my wife likes it so that’s what we did. Stopping at our local department store, I got: - Some last minute groceries needed for Christmas dinner - Some new cookie sheets - A new bedspread - Some Ice w/ caffeine drinks. Never tried them before so I’m looking forward to that. What IS it about Pergolide? They can sense that stuff even doused in all sorts of yummy things. The Nickerdoodles are basically a molasses and oat treat, very sweet and squishy. Actually, German Horse Muffins are even better, but they are stupid expensive, like $34 for a 6lb bag. Well, you can tell her an increasingly devout Christian in your support group says a lot of couples have divergent world views (most all of them, actually…). And she should look for someone who loves and respects her and is willing to work at the relationship, even if you don’t sit together on Sunday morning. Of course if she goes the “I’m better than you and my church says you’re evil” route, then run away. Lots of odds’n’ends at the grocery store, to make sure I don’t have to come out again until Boxing Day Madness is done. Got the pork and lard yo make tomorrow night’s tourtière; a few of Cub’s faves; stocking stuffers. I was shopping in our neighbourhood Safeway. It was busy, but it sure felt less tense than when I had to go to Big Box territory yesterday. ---

Planned: nothing Actual: Just ordered laundry detergent. I put in a load of sheets and when it was done, the app told us that it wanted more detergent. Got the last one out of the cupboard, so I need to buy more. I could go to a certain store, but the stuff’s heavy and I ordered enough to get free shipping. It’s almost exactly 14 months since my last delivery, so I won’t have to do that again soon. Speaking of things I don’t need to order again soon. I ordered 400g of cheese, as the shop charges per 100g. At least that’s what is on my order. Except now the shop has updated their page, and it is now 200g for the same price. Seems they had a typo. So I have 800g of grated cheese for fondue, instead of 400g. It’s grated by the shop (no additives), so I could use it for mac & cheese or Welsh rarebit. ---

Now that today is a different day, my answers from the previous post have, of course, changed. I bought a hot cocoa, some type of weird coffee drink that was disgustingly sweet, and some doughnut holes in downtown Detroit today, after seeing Santa Claus and getting a photo _free of charge_ On the way home dreading all of the work I still have to do, we bought a Hot-N-Ready pizza at the corner pizza store, and some garlic bread sticks. Cheap, tasty, and now at 18:23, instead of all of the work I was dreading, I’m here on the 'Dope. ---

Today, my purchase spans the entire duration of this thread to date. On the 22nd of December, from Simon & Schuster, I purchased a cookbook(Max Miller’s Tasting History for those wishing to know). I was advised to not expect said book until January 5th, yet it arrived at my door just a couple of hours ago via usps parcel post. ---

Nothing. But I had to work hard at it. As earlier mentioned, I promised to bring desserts for the holiday dinner I’m attending tomorrow at the home of my closest friend. A few years ago for my friend’s birthday, I made a chocolate cake filled with marshmallow that she loved. I thought it would be nice to recreate it for her with a few Christmas twists: I’d flavor the chocolate frosting with peppermint and crush some candy canes to sprinkle over the top. I baked the cakes, picked up the peppermint oil and candy canes. Too late, it occurred to me I should have made a bûche de Noël instead. I’ve made many of them and due to practice, I find them fun and easy to make. I’ve already baked the layers for the marshmallow chocolate peppermint cake, so we’ll press on. Naturally, the container of marshmallow filling for 2 layers wasn’t going to stretch as far as I’d remembered. I should have gone out and bought more. I just couldn’t face it. I made a batch of white peppermint frosting to substitute. Cake is layered as follows from the bottom up: Chocolate cake, marshmallow filling, chocolate cake, chocolate peppermint frosting, chocolate cake, white peppermint frosting, chocolate cake, then topped with chocolate peppermint frosting and a circle of marshmallow in the center. All that’s left to do is sprinkle the crushed candy canes on top. I’ll do that tomorrow, just before I head over. Made a sugar free pumpkin pie, too. I should’ve stuck with the original promised lemon cheesecake. But at least I didn’t have to go out and buy anything today! ---
