The big one is butter. My parents always bought store brand margarine, because it was cheaper. I hated margarine so much and I swore I would never have it in my own house. Now I use butter for everything. (I did finally convince my parents that margarine is bad for you and got them to switch over). When I was a kid I never got the big box of crayons or coloring books. As an adult I will admit to buying the giant box of crayons and coloring books and spend a rainy/boring afternoon coloring. The other thing was new clothes and shoes. I had a cousin who was 2 years older than me, so I got all of her hand me down clothes until junior high. I got a few new things every year like socks and underthings…now I buy new clothes because I feel like it and I buy shoes even if I don’t need them. But as an adult, I found out my parents didn’t do the things they did because they were mean… they did it because we were broke… I didn’t know we were poor.
