About the whole “Gone With the Wind” thing, I decided aftre I read the book the first time (I was 10) that if I ever had a son, I would name him Ashley. I haven’t changed my mind about that.
If I had been a boy, my name would be William Rio.
My mom wanted to name me Heather right up until I was born but she said, “One look at you and I knew you were a Haley.”
Almost named Cameron - very nice flow to the whole name, but I’m happy as Craig, thank you.
My folks went for names that could not be turned into nicknames, so we have Carla, Sherry, and Craig.
Though I do get the occasional “Craiger.” I’ll tolerate it from older female relatives.
No way! Did your parents have the New Age Baby Name Book too? (I so wish I were kidding.) My parents were actually going to name me Maya, until my aunt gave her dog that name. Never mind that my aunt and the dog live in another country, they had to find something new. If I had been a boy, I would have been Gabriel. Another aunt remembered that, and when she had a boy three years ago, he got to be Gaby the Baby.
Had I been female I was to be named Caroline, and the same was planned for my brother, but by the time my sister came along, my parents had had a change of heart and named her Catherine instead…
Was going to be named José Carlos, (Joe Charlie, Joseph Charles) but it turned out I am a girl, not a boy.
So my mom decided to find out a common(I wonder how common) female name counterpart of Carlos. The names she thought of(Carlota, Carolina, Carla), specially the first one, where abhorred by my father, who thought they sounded like names for the old rich spinster aunts found in novels and stories.
I am glad I got a different name. And I will never call any of my children any name with a resemblance to Carlos.
PD. To the one who almost got named Gabriel, that is IMHO the most beautiful name for a boy. To be fair, mom also thought of the names Gabriel and Gabriela, but dumped them from the list.
By the time I was born my parents enthusiasm for naming kids had waned slightly (i’m the sixth child of seven) so they decided to name me after the first player to score for Everton FC on the saturday after I was born. So I could have called any one of 11 names. Oddly enough the player I was named after (Brian LaBone) scored his second (and last) goal in professional football that saturday.
If I had been a girl, I would have been “Theresa”. Why? Because when my mother was a girl, she had a beloved dog named Princess. There was a time that Princess became very sick, and could have died. My mother, being a devout catholic, prayed to St. Theresa to spare the life of her dog, and vowed that if her prayer were answered, she would name her first born daughter after the saint.
Princess pulled through, and lived for many more years. So my mother was determined to fulfill her vow, but had to wait 5 years until the birth of my sister to do it.
I have older brothers named Erin, Daene, and Devin. My grandmother kept getting them mixed up. When mom was pregnant with me, my dad jokingly suggested Darren as a name.
Grandma didn’t like that much.
My wife’s first idea for a name for our daughter was Losira, which was the name of the Meredith Baxter character in the old Star Trek episode (“I am for you, Sulu!” “Aieee!!!”), the idea being that Losira was the first female starship captain on national TV.
I think my mom just thought it was pretty. I don’t think my parents bought many baby name books, the idea being that whatever names they came up with would have been personal and nifty rather than “Yeah, that’s the best one on the list. Let’s go with that.” Not that that’s what people do when they have baby name books, but I think they thought that’s what would happen. If I’d been triplets as the doctor originally feared (mom had a HUGE weight gain around Month Three), #2 would have been Kyla Rose and #3…I don’t think they ever thought it through that far.
I actually know a Rhett Butler. Normally, I’d say his parents hate him for doing such a thing to a kid, but I know his parents, too. They’re good people who must have been misguided at the time. tsarinaknows him much better than I, though. If she pops by, perhaps she’ll add more insight.
