Simon was musical guest once when Charles Grodin hosted. They did a sketch where they appeared together on stage, with Grodin wearing a wig similar to Art Garfunkel’s hair. Grodin had been playing a clueless, bumbling host, and this sketch followed in that vein.
As Simon started playing “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, Grodin sang (horribly). Simon halted the song in disgust when it reached the high tonic note following the words, “I’ll dry them all”.
This happened several times.
Fiinally, Simon had had enough, and walked off, leaving Garfunkel alone on stage.
Out of the audience emerged the real Art Garfunkel.
When the applause died down, Garfunkel with a stern expression, held out his hand. Grodin dejectedly took off the wig, and handed it to him.
