Yeah that can occur, the Springfield 1892 didn’t go into service until 1894 it looks like.
The model as year of gun or cartridge fell out of fashion, nowadays it’s by metric length (9x19mm), or parent case (.25-06), older ones by grains of black powder (.45-70). Then there’s the .38 Special, which was named because of stupid reasons.
You didn’t address ammunition aspect in that element of your post, though, so no, it wasn’t clear from context at all. It just sounded like you made a broad assertion that turned out to be incorrect and possibly uninformed - did you even know the AK-74 existed?
