What do non-UK dopers think of UK Prime Ministers?

Issac Issacs was a Governor-General, not a PM. I also believe that he was the first Australian-born Governor General.

  • Bubba.

Prime minister… is that like a president or something?

Close enough for the purpose of the OP.

And playing the part of the dumb American… chula!

That was a joke. I just don’t like smilies much.

Major…lol
Blair…I am still reserving judgement on this one
Thatcher…brilliant. A true jewel in the crown for UK politics. Her courage and conviction, her ability to take the hard decisions are unequalled in recent history there. Great PM

Well, you got me. I checked all the earlier posts to see if you’d joined in the thread before, then took the question at face value. I’ll be more careful in future.

I amend my answer to: sometimes, for example Blair and Thatcher.

Blair – I’ve always liked him. I think there is still some disagreement between Blair and Bush and I am holding onto that as a sign that he may yet redeem himself. I’m not sure why he is willing to sacrifice his career to support war.

Thatcher – I didn’t like her politics but I admire her strength and ability to get things done.

Churchhill – Dispite his personal flaws, I remain in awe of him. Perhaps it was his ability to inspire. He was larger than life. I don’t know how much of that was myth.

Gladstone – set the standard not often lived up to since

We’re not going back as far as Gladstone, are we? I’ve got a few opinions on Lloyd George and Balfour, too
