Like so many others here, generally just “weed” or “pot”. But very occasionally I’ll evoke my 8th grade science teacher, who referred to it as “mare - ih - who - you - wanna”.

A musician I knew told me pot heads were called “weed hounds” in his younger days, which would have been the 30’s - 40’s.

Like most others here, I use the various terms rather interchangeably, depending on situation and context. I wouldn’t bother to revive this old thread except to point out that to ME (born in the mid-1950s) “dope” has a very distinct meaning.
To me, “dope” refers specifically to those volatile compounds that give a high to people who sniff glue or paint for recreational purposes. This practice seems to have been pretty common when I was younger, and I’m not sure how it stopped. My guess is that it’s a combination of (a) better stuff is more easily available nowadays, and (b) paint and glue themselves are less common nowadays, and what _is_ available has been reformulated to remove those ingredients. (There are so many household products that have gone the way of the [washboard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washboard_(laundry)). Does anyone remember the last time they saw turpentine?)
I’m not sure why I am in such a small minority in having this understanding of “dope”. But it’s probably due to my father’s hobby (both in his youth and as my dad) of building (and flying via radio remote control!) many model airplanes. Check out the Wiki article on [aircraft dope](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_dope), which is a sort of paint used to make the wings of such planes airproof and waterproof. I used to see bottles of that stuff often as a kid, both in the basement and in the hardware store.

I realize that this reply is a year and a half later but those strains, heck all the classic named strains (Lamb’s Bread, Panama Red, Durban Poison, etc.) are landrace strains.

A strain that has grown spontaneously in the wild n a specific locale (what it means to me). As opposed to all the strains that mankind has bred and refined.

Naturally developing local strains. Unmessed with by humans. Some people think they are better, more “pure.” Others prefer strains that have been massaged a little, or a lot.

I have a similar understanding of “dope”. I wouldn’t use the word for cannabis.

I’d be momentarily confused if I heard “dope” to mean anything other than cannabis or opiates, but then again, it is non-specific enough that it wouldn’t be a stretch for other drugs, especially those on the depressant side of things that you can smoke, snort, or shoot up. Stimulants, drinks, and pills, seem more stretchy to me.

We used to call it Dope in the olden days – this would be sixties and seventies. It wasn’t confusing because heroin and cocaine etc. were ghetto and celebrity drugs, not middle class high school and college drugs. The other readily available drugs were ‘speed,’ ‘downers’, acid, and mushrooms. That was it.
I went through a short phase of dabbling in psychedelics but none of the others were enjoyable at all. Cannabis was ubiquitous, but woozy paranoia wasn’t my thing, now or then. So now I don’t call it anything, really.

I also don’t call it anything in the context of using it, because I live in a state with only medical, and all my relatives who have tried it did not enjoy it. (I wonder if there is a genetic component to enjoying it?) When I refer to it, I indiscriminately call it marijuana, pot, or weed. Except for medical which I always call medical marijuana, probably because of the alliteration and the fact it was a popular phrase which I use without considering alternatives. And on the flipside, legalizing it recreationally is the only time I call it “cannabis”, also because cannabis is used when talking about recreational legalization.

At the legal dispensaries here in Maryland, ‘cannabis’ seems to be the preferred term, so that’s what I use.

I became a teenager in ‘73 and have always called in grass. Even today in my personal conversations I call it that. Even my wife laughs that I call it that.
Professionally I just refer to it as THC. Doesn’t have to be marijuana. If it tests positive for THC it’s illegal here. Unless it’s Delta 8.
