In [this picture](https://23andme.https.internapcdn.net/res/img/public/pgs/ourservice/ancestry3/OUM5n5dXjiwUAo6MKklFxg_ancestry-composition-large.png), a donut graph shows the ethnic makeup of an individual. Each segment of the donut is further subdivided into exterior rings, which are then further subdivided.

Is there a name for this type of graph, and what software would you use to make one?

It’s called a multilevel pie chart or multilevel donut chart. You can make them in Excel by making a donut chart and then right clicking on the chart and then choosing select data/add.

I’m not sure how you make the data line up. I just found this by searching the graphs in Excel. I assume there is on line help.

Thank you!

It seems that Excel would require to manually calculate the angles to display the hierarchy, otherwise it’s just a series of adjacent donuts.

Still looking for an easier way to make them, hmm…

Excel does allow “bar of pie” charts that have the same fuctionality, but a different layout. If you’re not tied to the doughnut layout, check out bar of pie.

That made me hungry.
