What do you collect?

I stopped in 1994, but I do have a sizeable collection of baseball cards, dating back to the 50s, with the bulk of the collection being of the late 60s.

We also tend to collect dragon-themed items.

Itty-bitty kitties – miniature cat figurines. The size limitation is because of space, and to force myself to limit the collection, I’ve started focusing on cats playing musical instruments (unless, of course, I come across a fabulous find in a junk store or something).

I collect first edition books. I have two collecting interests: Stephen King and Arkham House publishing.

Stephen King: I have all of his books in hardback first edition. Not necessarily the signed specialty editions he has put out (can’t afford those!), but other than that, I’ve got them.

The highlights? All the Grant **Dark Tower ** books. A signed, numbered copy of Six Stories. Hardback copies of **My Pretty Pony ** and Cycle of the Werewolf. Genuine first editions of Night Shift, Carrie, and 'Salem’s Lot. I also collect anthologies where King has a short story published for the first time. For example, his novella *The Mist * (which appears in Skeleton Crew), was first published in Dark Forces. So, I’ve got that.

Arkham House: A small, specialty publisher that started off in the late '30s publishing H.P Lovecraft. Has published many books in the horror/mystery/supernatural field, including first or notable publications for RayBradbury, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert Bloch, Ramsey Campbell, Fritz Leiber, Lord Dunsany, August Dereleth, Frank Belknap Long, William Hope Hodgson, Seabury Quinn, and Donald Wandrei, among others. The highlight of my collection is a genuine Arkham House first edition of Beyond the Wall of Sleep. My Regrets? Not picking up a copy of **A Hornbook for Witches ** for $600 when I had a chance. A copy now sells for several thousand dollars now–if you can find one.

I also have a fairly extensive collection of Asian DVDs. I own about 220 and have watched probably twice that again on rentals.

British/Commonwealth and Allied Military Firearms are my main collecting interest, which encompasses not only firearms themselves, but also books, bayonets, and other militaria related thereof.

I used to collect Lego, but the new Lego sets lack the creativity or inspiration of the older ones, and so I’ve pretty much given up on that.

Shot glasses are interesting to collect too, although I only do it in a half-hearted kind of way (ie, I pick them up as souvenirs).

Otherwise, I just collect interesting stuff that I come across in my travels… Martini Enfield’s Collection Of Interesting Things, as it were.

I have a small watch collection. I thought about adding to it and found this one. But I could add a Triumph Daytona 995 to my motorcycle collection instead. (Okay, so two bikes isn’t really a ‘collection’. But a third bike… )

Dog hair tumbleweeds and killer dust bunnies that threaten to rise up and strangle me in my sleep.

Also locally made pottery. Functional pieces, nothing anyone could consider valuable, really. I just bought a neat planter made by Urban Artists in Indianapolis, which is a school that teaches differently-abled children the arts. They sell their works in a little shop. I like the energy that is put into the pieces there – the kids are so PROUD of what they’ve done, and it shows. And I can support local artists that way. All good.

I also collect certain kinds of books, specifically old grammar and writing books and old home medical books.

Coins, but that is boring and I don’t do it very well.

I have an extensive sea-shell collection that I keep scattered on beaches around the world… Perhaps you’ve seen it. steven wright

Mechanical pocket watches (skeleton half-hunter, preferably)

Firearms from 20th century American armed conflicts

Meteorites (Gibeon and Canyon Diablo primarily)

Trilobite fossils

Hobbies

Books, mostly. It’s not so much a collection as it is an obsession. I also collect elongated coins/squished pennies. As far as I’m concerned, the only reason for keeping pennies these days is to squish them.

Thimbles. I have about 300 at last count, metal, glass, wood, gold, silver, leather etc. etc.

Owls (not live ones) also made of all sorts of material and about 100 last count.

British banknotes which are out of circulation.

I also have a good number of CSA banknotes…well the Souths gonna rise again…right?

I have a small collection of rocking horses, all less than about seven inches tall, and none with riders. I’d like to add to the group, but I can’t find them anymore. They were all over the place for a while, but no more. So I guess my collection is as big as it’s going to be.

I sort of collect owls too. I have a couple of owl banks, some owl figurines, owl trivets, an owl hatpin holder, owl shaped jars, owl brooches, owl craft kits, and other owl related stuff. I also sponsor an owl in a local rehab/bird sanctuary. Does that count as a live owl? I don’t go out looking for owl stuff, I just pick things up if I happen across them. Fortunately, owls aren’t really big right now like they were in the 60s and 70s.

I do NOT need to go search eBay for owl-related things. I do NOT need to go search eBay for owl-related things. I do NOT need to go search eBay for owl-related things…

I collect moments in time and store them in a organic database inside my skull.

Franklin Mint and Danbury Mint 1:24 scale precision die-cast model cars and pickup trucks, all from the 1920s, -30s and -40s. I’m particularly fond of 1920s Duesenbergs, Packards and Cadillacs.

I have a massive collection of Indiana Jones items. I’ve got all the actiion figures, both mint in the box and open. I have movie scenes using the open ones. I’ve got all the books minus one that I can’t find anywhere.

I have a jacket, pants and shirt that were made buy the original designer, there’s actually a market for such things. I’ve also been collecting all the Disney stuff that has come out, though the items from France and Japan are hard to come by.

I’m only missing a handful of items that either never come up on eBay, or the reserve is just to high. I’m missing an unopened Indy from the Temple of Doom, the last one on eBay the reserve was huge as I went well above what they normally go for. I’m also missing the original text adventure game, I’ve seen all of one on eBay and I was on vacation when it came out and missed it.

Other then that I’ve got 600 or so CDs. I stopped buying so many a couple of years ago or I’m sure I would have 1000 or so.

Me:
NASCAR diecast (over 1800), Monopoly tokens (224 and counting), and Crayola Crayons (363 colors).
My wife collects mice, with an emphasis on Mickey Mouse and cats.

Andrew Lloyd Webber musical cast CDS, particularly the foreign language ones.
ABBA stuff. HUGE market for it.
Julian Lloyd Webber stuff.
I started collecting Legion of Super-Hero comics 43 years ago, and just never stopped. Ditto diaries.
Weight Watchers cookbooks.
I recently started collecting Carolan’s Irish Creme Liquor stuff. Great hobby for an alcoholic.

Cards. Of various types. Currently I have collections of Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh (which I’d like to get rid of) and Magic cards, all of which I got into through playing the games. I also have a collection of decks of playing cards. That started once when I was playing a game of cribbage with my uncle. I won, and he gave me a deck of cards as a prize. Next couple times I saw him he gave me decks. Then I started on my own.

I also collect anime, or at least try, but being a student I can’t afford to buy much :frowning:

I’ve got a bit of Indiana Jones stuff myself- mainly souvenirs from Disneyland circa 1996 and 1998 as well as the DVDs, but I also have an Annual from around the time Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade came out (which has various Indy stories in it and a comic-book adventure), as well as the novelisation of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and a Choose Your Own Adventure-type book in which you tag along with Indy as well.

You realise your collection will never be complete unless you get a Webley Mk VI revolver, right?

I also collect(ed) flight gear. My USN flight gear collection includes a S&W Model 10 with a round butt and 2" barrel. But the hardest thing to find was the survival radio. Technically it won’t really be complete until I find the battery for it.

Very nice! The Webley comment was meant on two levels though- not only are they the finest revolver ever created IMHO, it’s also Indy’s choice of handgun in * Last Crusade*- although he uses the Smith & Wesson Second Model Hand Ejector revolver and the M1917 revolver in Raiders and Temple of Doom respectively.

Must have been fun trying to track down an S&W Model 10 with a 2" butt- the only versions I’ve seen around recently are either the 4" Police model or the 5" Victory model.
