What do you do when you leave your grocer discount card at home?

I resent the whole card system. Why should we all have to play that game when 80-90 percent of the customers have a card.
Safeway will even let you use your phone number instead of a card.
Albertsons will use their own card if you don’t have one, so NO ONE pays the ficticious “non-card” price.

It’s all such a sham it aught to be outlawed as false advertising.

The reason, of course, is to encourage customer loyalty. What’s so evil about that?

No problem voguevixen. Didn’t mean to come across snarky - after re-reading my post it did to me anyway.

Loyalty cards can be handy but just another thing to have to carry around and make sure you have every time you may even consider shopping.

::shrug::

That’s not what I was asking. The post about Fred Meyer indicated that they don’t take a card at all. That’s what I was asking for confirmation of - do they not take a card at all, even though they are part of the Kroger empire, which does take a card.

As for using an Albertson’s card at Kroger, that is interesting, given that Albertson’s is not part of Kroger. Fry’s is owned by Kroger. I very much doubt that Kroger would deliberately take an Albertson’s card - it defeats one of the two main objectives of loyalty cards. Maybe the Albertson’s card is just getting a hit on the same number in the Kroger database. All of the Kroger cards begin with 4-0, I believe, leaving nine digits for an account number. With tens of millions of cards out there, that leaves a possibility of an accidental hit on an Albertson’s card. Does the Albertson’s card begin 4-0 also?

<hijack> I am just curious as to when Albertson’s got cards. I remember their advertising slogan a while back being something to the extent of, “You get the savings, without the card.” and they would show you how much you saved with their “great buys” on the end of your receipt. </hijack>

Anyway, I am glad all you guys are suckers for marketing researchers, because it will give me job some day soon, I hope. Your shopping habits are invaluable to advertisers like me.

I’m glad I don’t work for the marketeering “geniuses” that came up with this bad idea. I predict it goes the way of telemarketing, spam and pop-ups eventually. I just wish it was sooner than later.

On a side note, there used to be a MegaMarket in my area that had a policy at one time if any of their prices scanned differently than what was advertised at the shelf then you got your groceries free. Pretty bold and when I caught a mistake once they happily refunded my entire bill (about 40 bucks. I was pleased). Unfortunately these people went out of business.

Don’t Kroger and Randalls do the same? I have received plenty of free free things from Kroger and Randalls for this reason. I remember when I was living with my Dad he would come home once a month at least to brag about how he got some free groceries because they scanned his items wrong. He was always paying real close attention when they scanned his items because he’s very penny wise.
Oh, wait. I just realized you said you got your ENTIRE lot of groceries free. Yah. That’s pretty cool. I’d be paying VERY close attention when the cashier is scanning if grocers did that.
