In the late 1980s I dated a guy named Drake. Tall, sandy-blond hair, blue eyes, wicked smart, owned his own tuxedo. Drove a VW bug up to the Yacht Club (his parents were members) and had it valet-parked, which was the most go-to-hell move I’d ever seen. So you know him? No? Oh. Then I don’t know who you mean. ---

I’m sure he’s a great singer, it just doesn’t seem very interesting from what I’ve heard, yet people seem to think his music is the best ever so I probably just haven’t heard the right things. ---

So someone who had an 8 Track of “Rapper’s Delight” (and remembers/bought the NEW cover version of that song/cover compilation CD that came out almost 20 years ago) and listened to Run DMC in elementary school, had every EPMD and Eric. B and Rakim cassette, remembers when herbs listened to MC Hammer, when it went from “cool” to not cool to like the Fresh Prince, went through a heavy Rawkus phase, remembers when Lil Wayne was a kid and (IMHO) sounded much better, remembers when Beyonce mispronounced Kanye’s name on MTV, or when no one would sign Jay Z and later when he got clowned on for copying Puff Daddy, etc. - I am not supposed to listen to Drake, either. And I’m cool with that. Drake might as well be Justin Beiber, but I’m assuming he’s a little better. It’s not a “hip hop” thing with me. It’s a young kids pop thing. ---

I hardly ever think about him at all. He’s okay, I guess. He had some pretty decent comedy chops for an adolescent on _The Amanda Show_, and he and Josh had a good chemistry that justified them getting their own sitcom. I’m happy for him that he gained a modicum of success, but he (or his agent) should have looked out for his interests a little better, and not been content with the one-note nature of his character. Josh’s character actually developed some during the course of the series, and as a result, he managed to land a substantial spot on an episode of _The Big Bang Theory_. Drake’s big post-_Drake and Josh_ project, OTOH, was a live-action/CGI made-for-TV _Fairly Oddparents_ movie, which TBH, wasn’t very good (as delightful as Cosmo and Wanda are). Most distressing (to my daughter, anyway) is that he doesn’t seem to want to do anything these days except hang out at Disneyland. ---

the equation would be the first thing to my mind. I’m not a total shut-out from modern music, I could name you a Katy Perry and Lady gaga song, I know that people called Taylor Swift and Kanye West exist (though I couldn’t name any of their hits) But Drake? no. Not until this thread have I had any inkling of their existence. ---

I enjoyed _Started from the Bottom_, but since then all his raps have sounded pretty much the same to me. Meanwhile tunes like _Hotline Bling_ are more of a club style than rap. I don’t see the appeal of this kind of song, even as something to dance to (too slow + flat), but I don’t go to clubs any more, so I’m not in the target audience. ---

I would have chosen the “meh” option if there was one. But he’s ok. His early stuff was better and since he has become bland and boring. What you gonna do? The reason I asked was to find out if there was a conversation to be had or if it was better to just walk because the OP just hates hip hop. ---

Drake is interesting to watch as he manages his brand much more than I care about his music. The whole concept of the Hotline Bling video - providing a steady stream of grabbable images so you could make silly, sharable Drake clips and he gets the viral buzz for it - was fascinating. A Harvard Business School case in “Marketing in the Now 101.” ETA: I didn’t vote in the poll. There was no option for “I know of Drake and understand why Drake is popular, but don’t actively listen to him.” ---

I voted “Drake?”, though that’s not entirely true. I’ve definitely heard his name and I’m sure I’ve heard his stuff and am just not matching the name with the songs. I generally don’t like hip hop but I think he’s more of a pop guy(?) Anyway I guess I don’t mind him or I’d probably recognize him as “the guy who does that song I hate”. ---

He seems like a pleasant enough guy, but I really can’t stand his music. It seems like every song has a total of about 6 or 7 words that are just repeated for the entire duration of the song? It’s incredibly grating.
