Season 2 has been very, shall we say…inconsistent when compared to the first season. There have been a couple of episodes where I have, at the end of the 42 minutes, said aloud to myself ‘What the fuck? Nothing actually happened’. Other episodes have been frustrating in that they raise even more questions instead of attempting to solve at least some of the plethora of mysteries raised thus far.
I’m not saying that the first season gave many answers, but there was at least some sort of progression. The Losties were trying to work out what the hell is going on and get off the island. They had a purpose. Things were moving forward.
Now, most of what we seem to get, if not some new ‘mystery’ table scrap thrown to us by the writer, is soap opera bickering and gossip. Also, many of the good season 1 characters have changed for the worse. Jack is more a whiny loser than ever before. Sawyer, one of the most entertaining and complex characters, gets played like a village idiot by Ana Lucia and doesn’t notice his gun is not down the back of his pants anymore until 3 hours later (wait, isn’t he supposed to be some uber con man?). Sayid is hardly given any decent screen time anymore. Locke, my favourite character, took a hit with that stupid ‘Fake Henry made me smash up the cornflakes bowl’ subplot.
Then there’s the fact that none of the characters tell eachother anything about their discoveries until it is convenient or the backlash on the official message boards demands it. And those inside jokes, the nods to the Internet crowd that we’ve seen a few times this season, are not cool, they’re smug and break immersion.
e.g.
Ana Lucia: Everybody hates me (wink wink camera)
Fake Henry: Why does nobody on this island tell eachother anything? (wink wink camera)
Very clever. Now, why don’t you writers stop reading the message boards on your iMacs, sit down, and get your shit together, hmm?
As to all you ‘Why don’t you just stop watching it?’ folks I’ll say to you: I don’t hate the show. I used to love it. Now I just really like it. I want the finale to put me on the upbounce back to love again.
Besides, I rode that coaster with the numbers and the hatch and the monster back in the first season and I need some closure. Pandora’s box is open. I will be there 'til the bitter end. I’m the guy that never stops or walks out of a movie, however bad it begins or becomes. Old wise man say, ‘Cake can only be tasted when baked’. I am just concerned that this steam train is belting down the tracks but has nobody driving, and this appears to be a growing sentiment.
