Well, not just because of that! but really…I’m 52. I’ve never ever seen women my age doing this to get the attention of men! Okay, i don’t hang out in bars, but I think this is much more a recent phenomenom amongst the young. ---

As for putatively straight guys engaging in displays of intimacy, there’s plenty of that to go around in the homosocial field of professional sports. In fact, this last couple of months I’ve watched all the handshake lines of the Stanley Cup playoff eliminations just to watch all that cuddling and butt-patting. Mmm. You go, guys. ---

must read second page before posting same thing for fourth time… Although yeah, I think you’re showing your youth by listening to Katy Perry. =P In all seriousness, this has been going on in vague cycles since the 70s at minimum–my mom complained about seeing it in bars near Navy bases when dad was in the service during the latter half of Vietnam. ---

What do I think? I think, “How do I _know_ they’re straight girls? They probably _are_ lesbians, in which case I’m not going to do anything so crude as to cheer, ogle, or hit on either one of them ever again. I’ll just write 'em both off.” So in my case, I think that attention-getting tactic is a failure. Don’t women use sexuality to manipulate men enough already? Jesus. I’m sick of it. ---

I dunno. I knew two women who did it -only- at social get-togethers in order to make one of the pair’s boyfriend hot-and-bothered. Sure, fine, I’m glad that’s a turn-on for him, but … I dunno. There was something very false and forced about it, and it just sorta seemed distasteful to me. Maybe I have more of an emotional (or at least attraction) criteria for kissing? ---

No, I’m pretty sure same-gender kissing among heterosexuals was a pop-culture phenomenon earlier than that. I seem to remember reading about Red Hot Chili Peppers concerts in the early 90s where Anthony would kiss Flea or somebody just to get a rise out of the audience. Or maybe it was Jane’s Addiction. Either way, I still wouldn’t have been one to complain, were I in the audience at that particular show. ---

Less obnoxious than people who assume that two girls kissing in public **must** be doing it for attention, because we all know girls don’t actually do anything for themselves, only for the approval of onlookers. Unless I had really compelling evidence otherwise, I’d be inclined to believe they’re at least a little bi-curious and taking advantage of an opportunity to experiment without having to adopt any labels they’re not comfortable with. I try not to make snap judgments about strangers, call me crazy. I’m sure it has happened that two 100% straight girls have been convinced to kiss each other for the amusement of an audience, but these days, where do you even find two 100% straight girls? How much do you really know about what they’re doing in private? :dubious: And no, I’ve never done this and wouldn’t care to kiss anybody I wasn’t attracted to, irrespective of gender. And as much as I like watching two guys kiss, it doesn’t appeal to me when there’s obviously no chemistry at all. I guess that’s part of my problem with the premise – if they can actually make it look good, how fake is it really? And if they can’t, I have more distaste for the guys who’d egg them on than the girls for going along with it “for attention.” Isn’t that why a lot of people go to bars? 😕 ---

Interresting response, which makes sense. I guess in my (observed) situation mentioned above, it wasn’t girl A kissing girl B, with chemistry between A and B. It was girl A kissing girl B, with chemistry between girl A and boy C. If anything, the underlying feeling of A saying “I’m using you to get my boyfriend hot” just came off as really skeevy.
