# What do you think Ryan\_Liam smells like?

I too have changed my mind. It’s not semen soaked underwear and failure potpourri…
The smell is:
It is millions of tiny electrons, each of them with hopes and aspirations, each of their electro-negative parents wishing they would become the text of an inspired story or a witty retort. It is millions of tiny electrons, dead and rotting under a harsh cathode glow, having given themselves to a pointless, band width wasting, Ryan\_Liam post. It is sadness incarnate.

While I’m as annoyed with **Ryan\_Liam** as the rest of you (my god, how many times do I have to tell him-I’M TOO MATURE FOR HIM!!!), this is starting to get pretty mean-spirited.

Some of us work like that. She doesn’t. The reason I can get away with flirting with her and suchlike on the board is that … wait for it … I know her apart from board interaction, and I generally know what she’s okay with. Simply amazing what you can learn when you actually bother to get to know someone, as opposed to random “how YOU doin’?” or “I am TOO mature enough for you!” bullshit.
Respect goes a long way when you’re first meeting someone.

Here’s the problem: **Ryan\_Liam** is a pathetic, lonely teenager. This is no crime. We’ve all been there at some point. His crime is not being able to shut the fuck up about it. And for some unfathomable reason, our boy has decided that negative attention is better than no attention at all, and to that end he continues posting his own special brand of rancid cat-sick. And we’re feeding the beast, people- everytime you reply to him, he gets some little charge out of seeing his username on-screen. It’s rather like that rainbow-wigged John 3:16 guy- and we all know what happened to _him_.
(I’m fully aware of the irony of making such a statement in this thread itself, so before anyone feels the need to point that out, thanks- I’ve noticed.)
I’ll end with an impassioned plea to **Ryan** himself:
Stop. Just stop. I understad you’re young and lonely, and it sucks, I agree. But making a sad little spectacle of yourself is not going to solve anything. Is pity really better than mere neutrality? Annoyance with and dread of your posts really better than just being a face in the crowd? Do you need to be paid attention to so badly that you’ll suffer any indignity just so someone looks at you for a second?
Think about this long and hard. Don’t just reply immediately with one of your ridiculously inept one-liners. Why do you want attention so badly? And why do you want it from _us_? Can’t you find anyone of your own age (or at least mental level) to pester?
You obviously want to be a respected and well-liked poster. This is not going to happen if you keep doing things like this. So please stop. Because right now, you’re about the most annoying little kid I’ve ever come across, and it’s only going to get worse from here.

Literally, “Toga and six”, which was a phrase used during the late Republic when a Senator was looking for a prostitute. The original euphemism was that a roll in the hay cost as much as a toga and an additional six _sesterces_ for a skilled and willing whore, and the -a ending became clipped (another fine example of elision), leading to “tog et sex” as an inquiry.
After meetings of the Senate, it was commonplace for groups of patricians to wander the streets, approaching attractive women and asking them “tog et sex? tog et sex?”
The phrase has apparently survived to the present day, as evidenced by posts in this thread. Etymologists will certainly get a bug in their ear about this, and entomologists will certainly get a bug in their ear about that.

For the record, I have no problem with flirting on the board, and joking around and getting to know other people. D’uh, that’s what happens all the time around here.
What I DO have a problem with is when someone who is clearly too young and immature for someone keeps hounding that person and blabbing about how “hot” he finds that person.
**Ryan\_Liam** : you are barely 18 and you are just out of high school. I am 24 and I am out of college, and thinking about going to grad school. Do you understand? You say it’s only what-six years? You are the same age as my little sister. You are also WORLDS away from me in experience and maturity. You’re NOT cute. You’re NOT funny. It’s flattering at first, but now it’s just creepy. All right? I HATE to hurt your feelings, but if you don’t stop this crap, I’m complaining to the admins.
