I just wake up sometime between 2:00 am and 4:00 am regardless of the day. I’ve been this way for years now. I’ve filled this time with activities though and actually start to feel rushed now if I sleep past 4:00.
It’s a pain in the neck if I’m sharing a room with anyone on vacations and such.
Usually it’s the soft underside of my little dachshund’s muzzle, resting on my neck. He plants it there repeatedly if I try to sleep past 8:00 a.m. That’s his first pee break/breakfast time.
Meow meow meow meow meow which gets our little dog growling because she gets jealous when any other pets come near me, so it quickly turns into meow meow meow grrrr meow meow grrrr meow meow. By this time the commotion wakes up the big dog in his cage (we can’t let him roam the house at night) so he starts going whine whine bark whine whine bark bark whine whine. Then I glare at the alarm clock and think that I could have slept for another hour.
Occasionally we’ll get some variety and one of the other cats will come in and knock everything he can off of our dresser onto the floor, because he can’t just meow like the other cats to let us know he’s hungry.
Once in a while I get to hear the beep beep beep of my alarm clock.
Mostly the mass of birds in the trees outside my open bedroom window. They sound remarkably like the birds on the alarm on my phone which follows if they fail.
Alarms #1&2 are an old cell phone with an annoying beep set for 10 minutes apart in case I turn them off in my sleep. (7:30 and 7:40). Alarms #3&4 are an old clock radio. #3 is set on a local station that is current music but slightly staticky turned up to painful. It is set for 7:30 but the clock is set 3 minutes fast. Alarm #4 is an annoying beep set for 7:40, but 3 minutes ahead. The snooze is at 8 minutes on that one. So:
7:27 #3
7:30 #1
7:35 #3
7:37 #4
7:39 #1
7:40 #2
7:43 #3
7:45 #4
7:48 #1
7:49 #2
7:51 #3
7:53 #4
Unfortunately, the clock radio shuts off after an hour so alarm # 5 is my medical assistant calling at 8:45 to make sure I am on my way.
Is it clear that I am not a morning person?
Slightly hijacking my own thread:
I am not a morning person, by any stretch (though I do stretch in the morning. It’s confusing). It actually amazes me that I wake up naturally between 7:30 and 8:00 AM when I don’t have to set an alarm. In my younger days it was 10:00 AM or after before I would awake on my own. I just do not understand you folks who get up at 4:00 AM. To me that’s not a time to get up, it’s a time to stay up until. My mom, long since retired, still sets her alarm for 4:00 AM every day. OTOH, she is in bed by 8:00 PM. This time of year it’s not even dark yet! I don’t get it. I tell her “Look, if you’re going to keep farmer’s hours you should at least plant some vegetables in the yard”.
I’m awakened by my shrill alarm clock or by my internal alarm (which thankfully goes off before the electronic one, allowing me to kill it in advance) at 5:30 AM.
Pepper Mill sleeping next to me (unless I’ve been snoring too loud, in which case she’s on the couch), with our cat Hestia curled atop her or beside her. If I’m lucky, our other cat Hermes will be on my bedstand, drinking the water from the cat dish I’ve placed there. Or else lying on my pillow and purring loudly.
I get up, grab my medicine bag from my dresser, use the bathroom, then continue on to the kitchen. Turn off night light, take pills. Clean out cat dishes and place in “dirty dish” sink with water in them. Get fresh cat dishes and give them fresh food. Fill plastic mouse with cat treats. Go back to bedroom and get dressed, fold my sheet or blanket. Go downstairs and scoop litterboxes, throw bag in trash. Bring up any wash hanging downstairs. Bring up morning paper delivery. Take out trash/recycling if it’s That Day. Wash hands. Grab stuff for breakfast to take with me, try to leave without waking anyone.
I am not a Morning Person, but I play one in Real Life to dodge the morning traffic. I’d rather sleep until at least 7 AM, maybe 8.
For the last… 8 or 10 years, I guess, I’ve used the same stock Samsung alarm tone. It was annoying but I always used it so it became ingrained as my “wake up NOW!” tone. However, a few weeks ago I upgraded to a new S10 phone and of course my old alarm tone isn’t in their list, so I had to choose a new one. The new one is slightly less annoying but so far I haven’t slept through it.
On the weekend I usually wake up to my bladder or the sound of my boys arguing over the Xbox. We don’t have pets to wake us up.
I’m not a morning person so during the week especially I want to get up and start my coffee (recently purchased a Keurig, which has made that task exponentially better) and hop in the shower to wake up. I have no use for a snooze feature and no desire to perform a routine like this:
This would make me stabbier than Jack the Ripper. Fuck that… if I’m going to go back to sleep then I’m going back to sleep, let me wake up on my own in three hours thankyouverymuch. None of this half-awake, half-dozing shit when I need to be up and getting ready for work. Waking up at 5 am sucks so why drag it out? There’s coffee waitin’!
What I really want is one of those old Sony alarm clocks form the 70’s with the flip numbers and manual dial tuner. I have one floating around here somewhere that has the numbers on these turning cylinders / rings. However, the alarm doesn’t work and I really want one with the flip numbers. I keep my eyes open for one on eBay, but rarely do they pop up.
