I want the same thing I ask for every Christmas: new running shoes. I don’t think I’ll get 'em this year, though. My husband gets annoyed at me because I ask for the same thing. So far, he’s humored me, but he told me he won’t anymore because he thinks it’s lame to give me the same thing year after year. I don’t mind, though - that’s why I ask for them when he asks me what I want. ---

I think I might ask for a wide angle converter, the telephoto lens and a tripod from my family (for my new Canon G10). I’ll settle for the wide angle and tripod. All I asked for from my boyfriend was 1 blessed week when he didn’t have his fucking blackberry on 24/7 with the phone attached to his ear. He’s taking me to Belize, although he claims I get another gift. Also, I bet he will take the Blackberry. I bought myself some lululemon workout gear and the camera for Christmas. The camera has been worth it, but even though I love my lululemon workout pants and jacket and want to have their babies…OMG, why do they charge an arm and a leg??? ---

Every time I see the commercial on TV, I mention how much I would love to have the set. My husband thinks I’d lay around all day watching episode after episode, so I don’t see him getting this for me. – **new pajamas** Mine are worn out–comfy, but worn out. I’ll probably get this as long as my husband understands the difference between something I’d like to wear and something he’d like to _see_ me wear. Big difference there. – **a pair of nice, comfortable indoor/outdoor house shoes** This is a definite possibility since I have my eye on a pair that are so soft on the inside like one of those super-soft baby blankets. I’ll just point someone in the right direction at the shoe store. Growing up, I was never asked for a list of things I wanted. I was taught (by strict manners-minded parents) that you should be grateful for whatever you get from a person and that the gift itself was somehow a reflection of how the giver perceived you. A few Christmases ago, I watched in horror as my nieces and nephews requested gift receipts as they opened their presents as if to say, “I don’t care how much time you spent in the toy department picking Just The Right Gift for me, it’s not what I want. In fact, I know for a fact that I lack the ability to enjoy it on any level, so I need you to surrender the required documentation so that I might go to the store and exchange it for something I _really_ want.” :rolleyes: ---

Every household giving something to each other individual was fine 20 years ago, but now that we’re adults there are more households, and spouses and new kids–it’s gotten to the point where we can’t fit all the people and all the stuff in one room at one time. It’s ridiculous. I’d love for us to either set a strict spending/space limit, or to draw names. I’d settle for this, too. I don’t really need anything and I have strong likes and dislikes. That’s pretty much true of all the adults in the family, but because it’s Tradition, we must all struggle to buy each other stuff. ---

I’ve asked my parents for a running GPS thingey, which I’ll probably get. Also they always give me underwear and pajamas. I’ve asked my boyfriend for an engagement ring, which I probably won’t get. So maybe I should also ask him for socks, just to cover my bases. ---

Oh, I forgot the thing I want most of all. I want a big inflatable light up turkey to put in my yard before this year’s Christmas parade. Every year, the night of the parade they do carriage rides through our neighborhood. (I’m still not really clear why anyone would want to take a carriage ride through here–it’s a nice enough place, but not fancy or of historical or architectural interest.) So every year, we get a flier asking us to make sure we decorate appropriately for the season. Which is fine and good, except that they always have the parade the day before Thanksgiving. Except this year they’ve moved it up to the weekend before. If I can’t find a turkey, I’ll settle for a big light up finger. Or a neon sign that says “Happy fucking Thanksgiving!” God, I hope someone can find me a turkey. ---

As for my realistic wishes…I want the Civ IV expansion, Beyond the Sword, and I want to get a couple of rings resized so I can wear them. That’s really about all the material things I want. In fact, I told my parents that I’d just as soon they make a donation to Heifer International as give me a gift, because I already have enough THINGS. In fact, I really have more than enough THINGS, and I’d feel better if some poor family somewhere got a goat or some rabbits to help make their life a little better. ---

1.) The car we have been planning to buy for months. 2.) A pleater, which is a machine that pleats fabric. So I can smock it, or just gather it up for a seam. I’d better get the car, since our only vehicle is dying a slow and painful death. It was supposed to happen this weekend, but no. Maybe next month! I think I’ll get the pleater. ---

My family long ago decided that Christmas isn’t really for we adults, and should be for the kids, so technically we aren’t supposed to get gifts for each other, only for the children. I don’t have Christmas with my family most years, they live in a different country to me, so I doubly don’t get gifts, even sneaky ones, because I’m not there. Out of sigh out of mind, for the most part. I did go back home for Christmas 2006, so I’m not due for another return for a few years yet. I miss my family at Christmas more than any other time, because I think of it as a family day, but I don’t care about the whole gift-giving and -getting thing.
