Just once I’d like a card or even a “Happy Father’s Day” from one (doesn’t have to be both) of my stepdaughters. Both are in their 30s now, and one is still unemployed and living at home. I have been sending my stepmother Mother’s Day cards for 36 years now (since she married my Dad, obviously) even though I’ve never lived in the same house with her. ---

I am so sorry this has happened to all of you ☹ At least I had my dad for a long time - even though he started smoking when he enlisted in the Army in 1946 and didn’t stop until he was admitted to the nursing home a couple years ago, for most of that time he was reasonably healthy and happy. Still - don’t smoke, people. His last 20 years would have been so much better without it, and his doctor told me his dementia was caused by the smoking, so that could have been avoided altogether. That’s my Father’s Day gift to everyone … if you smoke, stop!! There’s not another better thing you can do for your family if you do. (sorry to still be a bummer … I’ll stop now). ---

What did I get for Father’s Day? Two sons who are intelligent, ethical standup guys. They’ve gone further professionally and educationally than me, just as I did with my father…that’s the family plan that has been in effect for several generations. I couldn’t have done it without my Dad, and hopefully was able to give my sons a bit of boost in the right directions. And they phoned me, and we talked about our plans to get together in San Diego next month. Nice. ---

I always take my family out before and after, but on Father’s Day, there’s a tradition where a group of friends (all fathers) go to the track for beer, cigars & the races. After, there is always a BBQ where everyone shares their best dish from secret family recipes (lol)… and fresh caught fish are cooked on an open flame. Even more surprisingly, I didn’t hear from my stepdaughter, who in recent years has worked to forge a closer relationship than we had in her teen years. Close family (3 kids still here) was good, though. ---

What did I want for Father’s Day? Nothing, really. For so many years, I wished I was a father. For the last six Father’s Days, I’ve been one. That more than suffices. My own father will be 89 in a couple of weeks, and is getting frail, but his mind is still as sharp as ever. I got to spend time with him on Father’s Day too. It was a good day. ---
