Follow up question: Didn’t Moby and Marilyn Manson have a feud at one point? What was that about?

Actually the whole thing started when Moby spoke out against Eminem’s lyrics at the 2001 Grammys.

I’m not sure calling Eminem’s lyrics homophobic qualifies as accusing him of closet homosexuality.

I was going to make a remark of that sort. I just think it’s unfair to characterize **all** of Moby’s music as such, seeing as how most of it isn’t (“stolen” from dead blacks, that is).

I’m working from memory here so someone may want to correct me if they know better.

I saw Moby on Craig Kilborn’s show when the Eminem/Moby feud was first getting warmed up. Kilborn asked him about the homophobia comments Moby had made about Eminem’s then latest album. Moby said that he thought it was strange because according to friends and people he talked to in Europe, a large percentage of people over there thought Eminem was in the closet. He mentioned that he had gotten an e-mail from a friend in England listing the top 10 reasons people believed Eminem was gay. Kilborn asked if it was meant as a joke, Moby replied that it wasn’t a joke e-mail as much as speculation. The only reason I remember (he only spelled out about two) was one that pointed out that Em had mentioned in some interview that he liked to take a combination of Ecstasy and some prescription drug like Valium or Prozac (this is the part I’m hazy and ignorant about). According to Moby, the drug combo was popular in the gay club scene, I have no idea not being that worldly about drug culture, the club/rave scene, or facets of gay culture.

I so things like this combined with comments about the homophobia of Em’s lyrics and questioning the marketing and availability of music with such content to young kids, a big part of rap and especially Eminem’s audience. didn’t endear Moby to young Marshall.

LIke I read somewhere online, for a guy who makes a big part of his living poking fun of others, Eminem sure is thin skinned when it comes to jokes at his expense. Come on, jumping ugly with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, a cheesy hand puppet? Way to showcase those mad verbal skills, Mr. Mathers.

Oh, that’s right, he’s also feuded with the Insane Clown Posse. Now I respect him.

Moby reminds me of the short little bald guy on Benny Hill who was always getting the top of his head slapped by Benny. Every time I see him, the Benny Hill chase theme starts playing in my head.

BTW: I like a few Eminem songs- am I going to hell?

I mostly agree with you, but I think he’s perfectly entitled to pick on the guy with the heart problem. Not to take this into GD territory, but I think that heart problems become irrelevent as safeguards against criticism when owner of the heart with the problem still manages to invade entire countries on trumped up pretexts.

Yeah, Eminem’s grown some balls with the Ja Rule feud, and is also taking on a good cause. Murder Inc ain’t the epitome of great music. Then again, using your eight year old daughter is a fairly poor, albeit hilarious way to fight your battles. Em gets 10 points for the target here, 5 points for effort, but I’m going to have to dock him for his failure to fight his own battles. I won’t treat him too harshly, however. After all, Ja Rule was the one to include Haillie in the tiff, and it’s only fair that she gets the right of reply.

compton\_homie, are you a homie from Compton, North Shore of Sydney or Compton, Gold Coast (assuming that L.A hasn’t uprooted and dumped itself on the east coast of Aust?)

I was just going to pop in here to point out that the Pet Shop Boys wrote a whole song questioning Eminem’s sexual preference, but then when I was trying to Google the lyrics I came up with this hilarious article from the Village Voice which seems to claim the Pet Shop Boys want to somehow get in on the sparring and rivalry that rappers enjoy.

> [@](#):
>
> he Eminem song of the year is now and will forever remain the Pet Shop Boys’ “The Night I Fell in Love,” where a certainly fictional, probably underage male spends a night with a performer who tells Stan and Dre jokes and shrugs off those homophobia rumors. In bed, said performer is a nine. Next morning, he “couldn’t have been a nicer bloke.”

and…

> [@](#):
>
> “The Night I Fell in Love” is a great Eminem song because it assumes the standard argument that hip hop’s songs of mayhem are “just stories,” daring Eminem to take offense at a skillful fable that insults his pathetic manhood while calling him a nice bloke. Where ordinarily the Pet Shop Boys are masters of narrative distance, what’s missing in their gibe is persona play—the possibility that the schoolboy protagonist could be Neil Tennant or Chris Lowe.

H’uh? What happened with Triumph?

Is Moby gay? Or is he just pissed in general, because Eminem’s such a turd?

At the MTV VMA’s awhile back Triumph interviewed Moby in the audience and made a few wise-cracks about the feud going on between him and Eminem. After Triumph finished interviewing Moby he went to interview Eminem and Eminem and his entire posse stood up and pretty much told Triumph/Robert Smigel to fuck off. The cameras quickly panned away back to the mainstage and the show went on. After this happened Triumph had a fake news conference about it on **Late Night With Conan O’Brien**. It was all quite funny.

Moby isn’t gay. He was asked (as were dozens of artists) what he thought about Eminem when Em was first Grammy nominated and HRC and GLAAD and other gay-rights groups planned to picket (and did, IIRC) the awards show to protest the promotion of Eminem’s homophobia and violence laden music as accolade-worthy. Moby said, in much the same language as Bono (most notably) and others that Eminem was talented but his lyrics were worrisome especially given the youth market that Em appeals to.

That, coupled with the Craig Kilbourne appearance, put Moby on Eminem’s hit list.

Well, have you heard all of the gospel-influenced electronica coming out of Venezuela lately?

Poor Everlast and Dick Cheney. Their heart problems have been reduced to joke fodder in a Cafe Society thread and perhaps even mistakenly attributed to Moby.

But if Moby were invading countries, at least we’d know what he was _really_ doing with all that money from licensing his music for commercials. Donations to environmental and social causes he believe’s in or funding his own mercenary army. So the revolution will be sampled and remixed instead.

Also, don’t discount the fact that Moby is one of the few musicians who is physically smaller than Eminem. (Em is like 5’6 or something?)
