Substitute a loved person for the cat, and see if you still think it’s funny. We don’t euthanize people, although one doctor in particular was doing it. If we euthanize loved pets, why can’t we euthanize people? But it’s not a joking matter.
I cried when my feline best friend was killed when I was younger, but it doesn’t mean I can’t deal with the pain with a joke.
That doesn’t give you the right to assume the same is true of anyone else.
“I was just joking! Geez, can’t you take a joke?” is often the refrain of perpetuators of passive-aggressive cruelty. It’s not a get-out-of-jail-free card for being a jerk.
