What does it feel like to sleep on a "memory/orthopedic/Swedish" foam mattress?

I forgot to mention, I live in two places. My apartment in Kansas City has the memory foam mattress, while my home in Chicago has a standard mattress with a 3" topper. I’d love to have a full one there as well.

My mattress is a memory foam high end product.

I find it remarkably comfortable if I am laying in the place I usually sleep, but unforgivably lumpy if I decide to sleep in an unorthodox position.

Having said that, I really look forward to getting home to my bed after sleeping in strange beds no matter how nice the mattress.

First off, describe your foam mattress – how thick, expensive, and old is it, and from what retailer?
Tempurpedic, almost 3 years old. It was a gift, but I’ve pegged the retail at around $4000. It’s about 10 inches thick and we have the box springs and a mattress pad.

Do you consider it all-weather
I’ve never had any thermal problems with it.

Have you had any problems, from back pain to allergies, that either got better or were exacerbated by switching to a foam mattress?
The Husband thinks it is great, but it’s not my favorite. I always wake up a few times each night and always have back soreness in the morning. No fumes, and reasonable support, but oddly unspringy. It’s not super soft, but it is dense. Someone’s description of sleeping on dry sand is probably the closest analogy.

Overall, would you buy it again (or replace it when the time comes)?
No. Honestly, I plan on spending less than half the money on a reasonable pocket spring mattress when we need to replace our current bed. Particularly if you are on such a budget that you are considering piecing together dog beds.

Looking at your subsequent posts, it seems that you have spent a lot of time trying to be ultra cheap about your mattresses. IMHO, this is a bad idea. Good shoes, good bras, and a good bed are worth the money. You will save yourself pain and frustration in the long term. Either save up or take advantage of the 4-years-no-interest deals that the mattress folks are always running.

Okay, I’ve slept on my new memory-foam topper for the better part of a week now. I ended up getting the one sold at Target under their own label [Target logo + Home], 2" thick, for a hundred bucks (regular price; I have no idea when/if this item will be on sale and for how much of a discount; if you’re interested in this, you might want to wait until the traditional “white sales” in February). Target is one of those stores that displays samples of their bedding material, so there’s a piece of the foam hanging from the shelf that you can examine. Theirs is of very good quality – quite dense, slow to compress, and pretty firm.

I don’t sink as deeply into it as I thought I would, but as my mattress is partly worn out and needs replacing, that’s a good thing. It’s very comfy when I’m on my back (which is how I fall asleep and do most of my sleeping) and comparable to my old featherbed for side-sleeping WRT pressure-point issues. (Dedicated side-sleepers might find it worthwhile to buy a thicker topper.) The foam topper isn’t as warm as my old featherbed, but that’s probably due more to its being only 2" thick, rather than to its material being that much cooler to the touch than goosedown. In any event, I’ll probably be sleeping on it year-round. But even if I don’t, I won’t have much trouble folding it up for summer storage, although it might’ve been a different story with 3" and 4" toppers. As for odors and fumes, the new topper still smells, but it hasn’t been a big problem – I’m a fanatic for opening windows (for at least a short while) in the winter and have been doing so; plus I fall asleep on my back, so that helps somewhat.

If I had to buy it again…? Yes… yes!

I have had a queen size for several years. It is not super soft at all. We have a conventional bed in another bed room and the dogs sleep on the foam. It has no problems with stickiness, hot or cold weather. There is no feeling of sinking.
My wife said I quit snoring when we got it. It did not stop hers though.
