Never heard it as anything but literal but I’d guess sex because I don’t know **anyone** who’d actually tell me they were running late because they were pooping. That’s more weirdly TMI than insinuating they were having sex. ---

I’ve only heard it as a euphamism for sex. [Urbandictionary.com](http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=laying+pipe) seems to agree that this is the most common usage of that phrase. ---
