See various fora e.g. BBQ for threads with titles containing “(RO)”. I looked it up in Google and it’s Ragnarok or Romania, and Acronym Finder wasn’t any more helpful.

Recreational Outrage. The poster is upset about something that does not directly affect them.

It doesn’t appear that the acronyms and expressions thread has been updated in internet generations. Some mod, maybe even Cary Grant hisownself, might want to start playing with it.

So this is just an SDMB acronym?

It was last updated in October 2007 (look at “last edited” rather than the date of the original post), and includes “RO.” What do you think needs to be added?

As an acronym it could be; there are 472 hits on Google for the phrase itself. It does not seem to be a very widespread term.

It means “Rotund Otter,” you see, a while ago the Board’s mascot was a portly, friendly otter. When something bad happened to the world everyone would post “lolotters” of Otto (Otto the Otter). Unfortunately these have all been erased because they got… disturbing as time went on and the definition was retconned to Recreational Outrage to save everyone’s sanity. We all keep up a very good ruse, I may even be in danger for explaining… oh my God, they’re coming for me helllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllnafsdngbvihjacvb zhjxcvbskdjfhbsb kja…
