Mississippi wins “antichrist.” I’m so proud.

**ETA:** More puzzlingly, it also leads in searches for “Geoffrey Chaucer.” Huh.

Hmm, not surprisingly, searches for “wine” turn up most often in CA, NY, WA and OR.

I tried to think of a search that would be definitely most popular in my home state of NY beyond any other. I came up with the term for a financial derivative currently much in the news, “Credit Default Swap”. Nailed it in one: NY comes back at a rate of 100, followed by NJ at 80 and CT at 58! (That’s some spread!)

Now what might NY be _last_ in? I tried to think of Western/Southwestern US terms. “Rodeo” came close, it’s in the bottom 10 but not dead last (even counting ties). And “hoosegow” was a big surprise: NY is actually _third_, behind Florida and Illinois (?!).

I’ll have to work on that one!

So, apparently the west coast is rather pretentious about their alcohol and PA will drink any beer they can get their hands on no matter what its called.

Bottom five states for “boredom” DC, HI, NH, SC, AZ

Hmm.

I decided to search medications, just for the heck of it.

Louisiana is taking Wellbutrin.
West Virginia is on Paxil.
Massachusetts is on Prozac.
Tennessee is on Cymbalta.
New York takes Advil.
Pennsylvania likes Tylenol (and aspirin)
Michigan prefers Motrin.

And on another, odd, note: Utah comes up tops for searches on Batman, Spiderman, _and_ Superman. What gives?

Guns seem to be weak in NY. Both Ruger and Mossberg come back second to last, maybe try along those lines.

Surprisingly it’s only 12th for guacamole, behind those states well known for their Mexican food, Minnesota and Connecticut. Or maybe it’s because Californians know how to make guacamole so they don’t need to look up the recipe.

Well this is a bit of a Catch 22, because I’m a born-and-bred New Yorker and thus might well not think of search terms a typical New Yorker wouldn’t think of searching for. For example, I myself didn’t have the foggiest idea that “Ruger” and “Mossberg” related to guns (to me, it sounds like partners in a law firm, though “Ruger” on its own recalls a brand of sugar wafer). “Glock” and “Smith and Wesson” would have been my names…

…and you’re right on, NY is second-to-last for “Glock” and hooray, dead last for “Smith and Wesson”!

I also just tried “high school football” as one of those things I know Texas and other Southern states are large-scale nuts about for reasons I absolutely cannot fathom. And indeed, NY is very low, second-to-last out of 50, but Vermont is even lower.

Hey, how about this game? Find the biggest spread between the top state and the second state for a given query. For example, earlier I found that NY was #1 in searching for “Credit Default Swap”, followed by NJ at 58 – slightly better than a 7:4 ratio between first and second.

I just tried, for no good reason, “Liberace” and was astounded to find that the #1 state (Nevada) led over the #2 state (Wisconsin) by 100:25 – that’s 4:1!

The correlations are more interesting. The state list for “Wal Mart” correlates most closely with the state ranking for “Obesity”, and correlates least with the state ranking for “High Schol Grad” and “Income.”

Costco has the highest postive correlation with “High School Grad” and the lowest with “Obesity.”

FL and OH lead in **Anal Sex**. (I’ll let you all fill in the 2000 & 2004 election jokes).

NY leads the nation in **Douchebaggery** and **herpes**.

SD leads the nation in **Hot women**. (Bet you’d never hear those words).

IL leads the nation in **skanks**.

However, AK and MI lead the nation in **sluts**.

KY leads the nation in **bloody stool**. (Fill in your KY Jelly jokes here.)

CA leads the nation when it comes to a **wet fart**.

And NC leads in **constipation**.

MS leads our great nation in **sucking dick**.

Hehe I didn’t think of that. I did deliberately choose those thinking that they are not much in the popular mindset, but are very popular with actual gun buyers. To try to self-select against people researching an actual gun purchase(not likely in NY), as opposed to people just looking things up that they’ve heard about.
