I belonged to a storytelling group; we got together once a month for stories and snacks. I work in health care … a young Irish Canadian patient, who appreciated the folk tales I regaled him with while he was going through his physiotherapy sessions, gave me the nickname “seanchai” which in Irish translates something like ‘storyteller’ or ‘folklorist’. When I signed on with my original ISP I was asked for a ‘good nickname’ - and that is what sprang to mind. At first, on line, I was asked (and often), if I’d read some sci-fi books which featured someone ‘seanchai’ and then I was asked how to pronounce it: “Sean Chai - are you Oriental??” an seanchai, the storyteller also wasp ---

I was trying to find out how a star could collapse to a singularity without violating the Pauli principle, and stumbled on a science MB called the “WhyFiles,” In order to post I had to pick a name, and the first one that popped into my pea brain was Ring. So, I am Now and forever more he himself. At the time I’d never heard of “The Lord of the …s” so it couldn’t have been that. ---

As a boy, I’d open a dictionary and read it for amusement. My head also gathers useless information. I became a sort of human encyclopedia and spell-checker for people around me. “What’s that mean?” “Go ask Nott.” It’s also connected to JFK’s inaugural speech. “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask why the porridge bird…” 😉 ---

I manage the QC Lab in a manufacturing plant. The Lab is 70 degrees F 24-7-365. The factory floor can be as much as 130 degF in the summer - therefore, the factory pukes hate the Lab guys (mostly because it’s our job to tell them when they’re screwing up the product, but AC vs. heat stroke factors in, too), and have labelled us, well, Labtrash. It’s been my username all over teh interwebs since 1995. ---

Mine stems from an online site for that sells gifts for drummers. The missus got found it and got me - a drummer in my spare time - a few T-shirts and stickers. I suppose there might be a SDMB rule for including the link in this post, so I will let those interested find it on their own.
