My voice sounds the way a dentist drill feels. Very shrill and grating and makes your teeth vibrate in an unpleasant manner. Sort of like a babbling brook filled with battery acid. * * * Now there’s nothing unexpected about the water giving out; “Land” is not a word we have to shout. ---

Oh wait! I want to change mine…it sounds the way it feels when you’re trying to stab something on your plate with your fork and it sorta skitters across it: uh-h-h-h-h-h-h-hh-h-h-h-hk! For hearing folks: I have a high-pitched nasal South Midland American drawl in English. In Spanish, I have a high-pitched nasal South Midland American drawl that constantly gets all the vowels wrong and spits out all the stop consonants. For deaf folks: Imagine swallowing something dry, rough, and difficult to get down. My voice has that effect on hearing people’s eardrums. ---

I’ve been told I have a really nice voice, but I don’t hear it. I’ve listened to my own voice on tape, and always cringe. It’s kinda low-pitched, nasal, and rather grating. Yet another reason that I don’t talk much. Essentially, it’s the aural equivalent of eating a peanut butter and vinegar sandwich. Yecch! * * * Heck is where you go when you don’t believe in Gosh. ---

To me, my voice sounds low and fairly monotoned, and scratchy when I’m tired… but on tape it sounds nasal, are childlike. I have no idea what it sounds like to others. I’ve been told it’s nice over the phone… ---

‘As you probably know, handy, you can feel the vibrations of a persons voice by placing your hands on the speakers throat and chest. What you feel is pretty much what it sounds like. Besides, it’s probably the best excuse in the world to get friendly with your favorite cutie-pie.’ Yeah, I tried that with a lady cop & got shackled so fast my head spun. Just kidding. Sometimes I do put my hand there or on a musical instrument they are playing. But if you spoke next to a balloon & felt it with your hands, you’d get the best vibration feel. I’m deafened which means I can still ‘hear’ sounds in my head if they are described propertly. Anyway, I get the teenager [boy] out of the bed by singing. He absolutely cannot possibly ever stand my singing voice. Maybe I could record it & sell it to get teenagers out of bed 🙂 ---

Hi Handy, My accent (a Dublin one) would probably sound like drinking a pint of smooth guiness while smoking a strong Cuban cigar, rough and smooth. You know, like your own voice sounds different different to you than it does to another person. handy; Too bad about the manacles. Next time, just explain things. Take advantage of the “sympathy factor”. 😉 A friend once told me that my voice sounds like the high desert smells at night. Cool, dry, and quiet. My voice sounds different at different times. This is how it sounds to me: When I am feeling a bit self-conscious, it sounds low, strong, and confident. I know that sounds backward, but that it how it sounds. When I am lecturing to my classes, I sometimes think I sound nasal, like a trumpet, or like one of the adults in the Peanuts TV shows–Wha whaaa wha whaaa wha whaa. I find myself wondering if they can stand to listen to me, but I guess they can, because they like my classes. When I have to yell, I can be very loud without being sharp. I like that. In one of my jobs (whitewater raft guide), I have to yell alot to make myself heard above the noise of the river, and I have found that I really like to yell. Normally, it is a medium pitch, a tiny bit nasal, and strong. It is not particularly smooth, but it is not weak or thin. Nobody ever comments on it, so I guess it is not really unusual. I do have a slight Long Island accent, that becomes stronger when I talk to someone else from Long Island. And on tape, I sound like a complete idiot. To use the food analogy that others have been using: My voice is like pizza. Different flavors and textures all at once. (My husband just read this and said that I got it right. Cool.) ---

Im going to have to imagine it… I don’t know about playing one of those WAV files & feeling the speaker, I suppose that would work. You all sound like a fun bunch. Do we have any great singers in the bunch? Sopranos? The feeling to sound part of the brain doesn’t translate sound the same as the air conduction part. But its better than nothing, I suppose. ---

I’ve been told (repeatedly) that my speaking voice is rather peculiar. One of the radio guys I work with keeps telling me I should do voice-overs or cartoons because it’s so “distinctive.” Gee, thanks :rolleyes: To myself, I sound a lot like the voice of Peppermint Patty in the old Peanuts cartoons.
