For the on-lookers that don’t know what everyone’s talking about, [ur=http://www.nambuch.or.kr/eng/diagrams/basicdiagrams51-55.htm]this is what sentence diagrammng looks like.
I never did grasp the significance of why it’s important to turn a sentence into something looking like a railroad switching yard.

I’m reasonably sure I had a brief unit on diagramming when I was in elementary in the early eighties, since I clearly remember seeing the drawings on the blackboards. However, I don’t think it stuck, since I can’t for the life of me remember how to do it, let alone all the complicated parts of grammar like split infinitives, comma splices, and so forth. 😕☹
