What film was most diminished by it's sequels?

I can tell you the exact moment the movies started to go downhill: when Obi-Wan says “There is The Other” in Empire.

You must of seen the alternate version with young Leia walking into Han’s classroom at the end.

“There is another.”

Also, that was Yoda’s line, not Obi-Wan.

Everything after Terminator 2 didn’t need to happen. The original ending could’ve done a great job of wrapping up the series.

While you’re not wrong that Trainspotting 2 does kind of diminish the first film, it’s not really for the reasons you’ve suggested. It’s also much darker and hopeless than the original.

I deliberately avoided Blade Runner 2049 because I thought it would diminish the original - I don’t suppose that counts.

However, my main purpose for posting is because I just happened across a related phrase that I had never seen before: to nuke the fridge.

Jurassic Park. I *loved *the original. It’s one of my favorite movies. The sequels have been going increasingly downhill ever since, and Jurassic World was dumb beyond belief. I don’t have high expectations for the new Jurassic World film.

Rocky? The only Rocky movies I care about are 3 and 4!

And it’s “another” or maybe “an other” not “the other”.

Supposedly Caddyshack is the Gold Standard for ‘Great Original - worst-ever sequel’. It is certainly extremely dire.

Major League was a very funny movie. It used an excellent deadpan, self-aware delivery mode for the majority of its jokes. The sequel had some good lines, but the delivery of those lines changed. The jokes seemed far more forced, more un-necessarily verbose, and seemed to carry ‘explanations’.

Simple example:
New-Dumb-Country-Boy-Catcher - ‘I bet you’re wondering how I got the nickname Rube, huh’? Ok - simple obvious, throw-away line to establish character IQ. We all know the gag. But then, the director follows up by having the character Rube is talking to respond "No. I’ve got a pretty good idea how that happened’. Everything is wrong - timing, continuation, unnecessary forcing of an secondary punch-line that adds nothing to the joke we already got. The whole movie has moments like that.

The 3rd installment is in the ‘never happened’ class.

They had me suspend my disbelief when they said the T-Rex couldn’t see you if you stood still. Thus, standing still can save your life. Then they tell me that it track it’s young over miles by smell. If it could smell traces of it’s baby over miles of terrain, then it can smell me pissing my pants when I’m standing right in front of it.
