Right before the ending of _Holes_, when Zero is re-united with his mother. As a parent, and I think for any adult, you have to be made of stone not to tear up at that one. Ditto on Jurasic Bark and ROTK. And the ending of Peter Jackson’s **King Kong**. Excuse me, I have something in my eye … ---

I’ve cried at numerous episodes of Six Feet Under, but I too was blown to pieces by the finale. Still gives me goose bumps thinking about it. ---

I tend not to cry in movies, but… Yes, I cried in _A.I._, both when the boy was abandoned in the woods and when he had the single perfect day with his mom. I cried during _Life is Beautiful_ several times. It had particular resonance because I had a very young son myself at the time. I cried at the end of _Il Postino_ when the movie director watches all the censored kisses. I cried while watching _The Sixth Sense_, when the boy and his mom are talking in the car, and she realizes his gift… and his curse. I would’ve cried during Boromir’s death scene in FOTR, but it just went on too long after he was pincushioned by Orc arrows. I cried when everyone defiantly sings _The Marseilles_ (sp?) in _Casablanca_. I cried when Morant and Handcock walk hand-in-hand to their doom in _Breaker Morant_. And I wept just a little when Merlin returns to Arthur from his enchanted prison in _Excalibur_. ---

I cry at the drop of a hat and most recently cried during _I am Legend_. When he kills the dog, his only companion, because it has developed the virus. Him crying while he strangles it is just too much. I also cried at the end when he sacrificed himself. ---

Most recently, _The Iron Giant_ made me cry. I’m almost embarrassingly easily manipulated. Apart from that, _Babe_ (“That’ll do, pig”), _Moulin Rouge_, _Forrest Gump_ (when he has made his speech at the antiwar rally and Jenny comes running across the water and he runs to meet her and they embrace and thousands of hippies cheer), the Gary Sinise-John Malkovich _Of Mice and Men_ (when George starts believing they might actually be able to get their farm, because I know what will happen), _The Fellowship of the Ring_ (“but there were some who resisted” and the first shots of Hobbiton, during which I thought “He did it, he fucking did it” to myself), _Watership Down_ (mainly because the ending of the book had me bawling and the movie reminded me, but still), and lots and lots of others. ---

I can’t believe I forgot this . . . I watched _Superbad_ last night and cried during one of the scenes (any guesses of which?) That was a good movie. I wish it wasn’t so crude, so I could show it to my students. Go McLovin! ---

Oddly enough, a movie that got me all teared…was _Angus._ It’s a so-so movie about a high school outcast, but there’s a scene in the middle where his grandfather dies. Angus’s reaction, and ESPECIALLY the scene in the park with the chess board (if you’ve seen it, you know) and pretty moving. ---

The montage at the end of _…And The Band Played On_ gets me every time. I can’t get through it without crying. The “Hit Weezer” scene in _Steel Magnolias_ gives me that rare mixture of laughter and tears. Very few movies can manage to pull that off. I always cry at the gravesite scene at the end of _Forrest Gump_, when he places the letter from Forrest Jr. ---

Movies don’t make me cry. That’s why, when _Bridges of Madison County_ came out and all I heard was how it reduced every audience to tears, I went to see it just to show that it couldn’t make **me** cry, no how, no way! Hey, I managed not to cry in the theater – I cried in the car all the way home. :o ---

_Forrest Gump_ when he asked Jenny if their son is smart or stupid…? _Mr Holland’s Opus_ - so many times but especially when the mom freaks out, “I can’t talk to my son!” I cried during _Lilo and Stitch_ when he is alone crying because he doesn’t have a family - but I was very pregnant at the time so that’s my excuse. _Moll Flanders, Hotel Rwanda, Finding Neverland_ This might be a shorter list if I write about when I didn’t cry. ---

Okay, embarrassing. Once, when I was feeling kind of lonely and depressed, I bought the movie “Shortbus” on a whim. ‘Cause, you know, who can feel depressed when watching pornographic sex acts? I popped it into the DVD player, ready to, um, enjoy myself. I was sobbing by the time the former mayor of New York City gave his “I did the best I could” talk. It’s a great movie, but I wouldn’t really recommend it as an intellectual alternative to porn, which is what I had thought. Oh, and throw me into the list of people who cried for a good 30 minutes after my first viewing of “Jurassic Bark”. ---

Sadness doesn’t make me cry, but scenes of transcendent acts can. The end of _The Miracle Worker_ gets me every time. A child’s mind, isolated for years in darkness and silence, makes the leap essential for language, connecting a symbol to the thing it represents; this opens a door to the whole world. Just incredible. I’ve actually teared up at a couple of cartoons. _Lilo and Stitch_, and _The Iron Giant_. ---

_Juno Into the Wild Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Rent Black Beauty V for Vendetta Schindler’s List 8 Crazy Nights Life is Beautiful_ _Juno_: At the end when the nurse asks Vanessa if she wants to hold her son. _Into the Wild_: When Chris realizes he’s eaten something poisonous and he has absolutely no way to get help. It’s basically my biggest fear, dying alone and utterly hopeless. _LOTR_: When Frodo is standing on the shore with the ring in his hand and decides to leave the others behind. _Rent_: Pretty much the whole last half after Angel starts dying. _Black Beauty_: At the end when he’s imagining being back with Ginger and Merrylegs. _V for Vendetta_: When Evey realizes V tricked her and she’s telling him she hates him, then realizes what the experience did for her. _Schindler’s List_: Not through any of the actual plot, but at the very end when the survivors are putting rocks on Oskar Schindler’s grave, Helen Hirsch makes the dam break. _8 Crazy Nights_: When the mall signs are gathered around telling him to cry and he finally opens the card from his parents… oh, man. _Life is Beautiful_: I’ve never seen the movie itself, but I know a little of the plot. At the Oscars a couple of years ago they did a tribute to some movies or something like that and they showed a clip of the father goose-stepping behind the soldier, and I just broke down. I’ll probably discover one day that it wasn’t a clip from Life is Beautiful, but it made me cry just the same. I could probably think of more, but I think that’s enough for now. I’m not a huge sap, I swear.
