The kid always changing his name was one of the things I’d liked about A THOUSAND CLOWNS.
My birth certificate says LOUISE. At some early point it was decided that I wasn’t being a “Louise” so they switched to my middle one. Transferred to Catholic school in 5th grade and decided that I preferred Louise. Dumb idea, changed it back again for H S.
My professional name is CRISS (STING was already taken).
Keeps everybody on their toes.
Anyway-----I’ve always like GLORIA.
I often wish my Mom had named me something like Amara, Mara, Chrysalis or Josephine. The first two I just love because they are pretty and simple… the last because they can be shortened to Chrys and Jo. Actually one weekend (at a sleep over with Rangers) I did go by Jo… that was fun. One of the guys at work now calls me Bob which I don’t mind.
Actually for as long as I remember I’ve gone by my middle name (Claire) but for some reason when registering for school the last year and next year I registered as my first name (Ruth). Another time I did a weekend campout thing (Christian thing that a friends convinced me to go to) and I was RC there… I kinda like RC as my name now though… it fits nicely. Distinctive (though people often ask me if it has to do with the cola or maybe the car from Toy Story) and myself.
Kinda cool story.
My mom read the book The Thornbirds before I was even born. She really liked the name Megan. She said that she would like the next girl they had to have that name. My parents decided not to have anymore children though. A couple of years later I was adopted and my mom named me Megan.
I love that story. That is a skeleton of the story, but it would probably bore you.
This name means “great” or “pearl”. Love both meanings.
Don’t know what other name I would rather have. Maybe Kirsten. When I was reading Little Women I wanted to be Margaret, to shorten it to Meg. (duh!) Do not know what went through my mind. I think I had a lack of synapse relay. I was such an idiot. Now I like when my friends call me Meg or Megs. I also like it when my nephew calls me Megsie. My name lends itself to teasing, but I can get through it.
I meant that the rest of the story would probably bore you. Please excuse me.
Actually, I rather like my name. My parents did an excellent job of naming me. My first and middle names are common enough that people don’t think they’re odd, but uncommon enough that I was generally the only one in my class (maybe one in the class above or below). The names roll off the tongue (I’m often told I have a pretty name). Also, in case I didn’t like my full name, my middle name, my initials, my first initial/middle name combo, and first name/middle initial combo also sound pretty good. (The only failure is that my monogram (small first initial, big last initial, small middle initial) looks kind of stupid - but not so bad as to be one of the “it spells ‘PIG’” problems)
According to my dad, when naming me and my sister, they tested all of those combinations to make sure that we’d have decent name options… partially because he never really liked his (He was the third… my brother is the fourth.)
When I was 10 or so, I wanted to be called Ruth. In fact, one day, my best friend, Agnes, and I decided we’d call each other by our preferred names when we went on an errand for her mother. So in the bakery, she called me Ruth, and the woman behind the counter says “Is your name Ruth? So is mine!” I was so embarrassed, I never did that again. My given name is Michelle, and I went by Mickie till I joined the Navy.
For the brief period when I thought I was pregnant a second time, I decided I’d like to name my second daughter Ruth. Alas, there was to be no second child, so the name goes unused… well, unused by me anyway.
